      Introduction

      Do you ever just listen—focusing on what surrounds you? What do you hear? Some hear the whisperings in the wings of an eagle. Some hear only a rat scampering through garbage to find enough food to exist.

      We all have a choice in life to make a difference or be a difference for ourselves as well as others. We choose, and that is called free will. Life will throw obstacles in our paths. It is up to each person how to remove the obstacles. Some cannot see past the object that hinders their way. They stop, sit, and let the world pass them by; then they complain and get angry because they are being left behind. Others see the obstacle as an opportunity, a challenge to achieve a greater capacity in life. They are willing to get down and dirty, to work through the obstacles to get to the other side.

      This book is for those who wish to hear the whisperings in the wings of the eagle and for those who are tired of scampering through life. We are each a precious gem in the natural state. Living life will smooth out the sharp edges, and the beauty of the end product hopefully will cause others to desire the same. I pray that the sharing of my journey will help others see that we have a choice and have been chosen. Through God’s love and mercy, life is what we make it.

      Listen, heavens, while I speak;

      Earth; hear the words that I am saying.

      May my teaching fall like the rain,

      May my word drop down like the dew,

      Like showers on fresh grass

      The Past and Present Me

      I look at myself today in contrast to the person I thought I was in the past. This contrast is from looking at the day-to- day events, my personality, and the ongoing results of who I was compared to who I am becoming. Every morning I would get out of bed; every night I would lie down to sleep. What happened in between this waking and sleeping consisted of who I was before discovering myself. I simply existed.

      I might have reached out to discover life, but I would soon retreat into the place I felt most comfortable. I would hide behind who I allowed myself to be. I knew I did not like where I was, so I blamed the outside world for all that subdued me. I did not want to think that I might have contributed to my own unhappiness or lack of courage to step out. I accepted my inabilities and blamed it on the fact that this was just the way I was; I couldn’t change.

      It wasn’t until I began to look at and accept my faults that I began to see light and life. Coming out of hiding made me know I could change. I was too inhibited to be bold enough to come out of myself. My self-esteem had put me in a place of accepting the excuses as to why I couldn’t do certain activities or accomplish certain goals. Rather than focus on my strengths, I gave in to my weaknesses. My lack of confidence was my crutch. I did not want to question who I was or what I could accomplish.

      The change in my life came after I had a dream that was so profound that I realized I had a choice in life. Through this awakening, I allowed myself to look at me. I began to question who I was and why I would not accomplish certain goals. My confidence and self-esteem became more positive. So I began looking at myself and wondering how I could make these changes. I prayed, and God answered.

      During a church service just before Easter, I conversed with a visiting priest. Without realizing it, I must have shared something with him that led him to give me some spiritual
