FIRST PLACE
Physical freedom,
Mental bondage.
But yes, the African-American is free
Free to dream, free to live life
Free to ponder the important American things.
No more slavery
I am free, you understand
No more slavery
I am free, but can you give me a hand?
With
The American dream
I can see it afar off
Sometimes even think I can touch it.
Most elusive it is really
But all my efforts I will muster
To find
What they say I can have
What they say I can achieve
But how can I do it
when my life is messed up, dark, bruised – busted.
I’m not homeless, I have a place to live
Cracked walls, dim lights, shaking floors, and critters
Shall I be quiet? No.
If I shut up about it they’d call me a quitter.
Still, you can succeed, I’m told
Just stay out of trouble and stay in school,
If it don’t fall down around me.
If I do these two things
I’ll be as good as gold
I’ll reach the American dream
Before I’m too old.
What if I told you no matter how hard I work,
I’m still left out.
Not completely by your doing – you don’t have that much power
This ‘dream’ is not reachable because of Satan, the devil, the devourer.
No matter what you call him, it’s one and the same.
We’ve got to fight back, gotta call on God’s Name.
Image1.jpgHave you heard?
The reward is with the least among men
The first shall be last and the last shall be first
Now why is black folks always last and black things considered cursed?
Always have and probably always will,
That is, until
Until, we call on Jesus,
Jesus, for real.
Lord, show us Your might.
We keep coming up last in the
areas of life.
From one corner of the world to the other
We are despised
for being the darker brother
Jesus, we’re last but with your help we’ll
