It was in the eastern part of Connecticut in 1942 that a singer-songwriter was born. His name is Gary DeCarlo. He was born into a musical family. His mom sang, his father sang and played the guitar, and a sister who also sang. Gary was introduced to music at a very young age. He started out on the East side of Bridgeport until he was about seven years old. Prior to that his mom left his father when he was three. His dad was not ready to settle down with a family so the marriage ended. It was a very difficult time for them making ends meet with the rent, groceries, and over all expenses. Gary recalls that there were a few years that his sister and he had to wait until their mom received her income tax check to celebrate Christmas. According to Gary you just learned to accept things as they came but all in all we had fun and made the best of it. Gary and his family then went to live with his mother’s friend Ann Gabriel. She had two children of her own, plus Gary, his mom, and his sister. They could not stay there for too long. They finally got an apartment on East Main St. It was a one-room apartment with a toilet in the hall. I could not understand at the time why my mother would always cry. Obviously, it is hard for three people to live in one room apartments the size of a small bedroom. Gary’s grandmother on his father’s side got the family and apartment on the second floor, right under hers. It was two rooms but at least they could go upstairs and eat meals with her. This helped Gary’s family so much at that time. Gary’s own mother was a kind, caring and giving woman. She would give her last dollar. She had a pretty rough life when she was young. Her mother passed away when she was seven years old. She was pulled out of school to raise Gary’s uncles
