About this ebook
Lynn Cameron
The author comes from Standish, Michigan. A one stoplight town with a Mayberry-type feeling. Everyone knows everyone and when tragedy strikes, this little town does great things for each other. He grew up with that philosophy—take care of your neighbors. His roots are there, even though he has been away for 25 years. Over the past 25 years, he has served in many roles. A juvenile probation officer, a hospice social worker, a youth minister, a camp counselor, and a volunteer recruiter. All of these positions have allowed him to be surrounded by very generous and caring people. He has mentored several youth and has learned so much more from them than they learned from him. In the back of his mind, he had a feeling that he might end up in a religious order some day- he fought the urge and made many excuses. About 18 months ago, he began the application process. For over a year, he felt that was his destiny. Then everything changed. A chance meeting with a teen ager. He knew from the moment they met, that it was going to have an impact on him. After mentoring many others, this was the first time God said to him “have faith in me- do everything you can for this young man.

Reviews for God's Calling
1 rating1 review
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I received this book as an ARC. It is a quick read (only 90 pages) about a man who has been on a spiritual journey who meets a teenager who helps to bring focus and clarity to his life. The overall storyline was interesting, especially when he was asking questions of God and perceiving the "answers" from a cell phone's ring and the associated time that the "call" occurred. I felt this story had the potential to be a really good book but needed to be fleshed out with more detail and a sense of continuity in order to achieve that.

Dedication
I dedicate this book to Robert. Although I am his mentor, he has taught me more than I have taught him. He is the most selfless person I have ever met. He inspires me every day and is the reason I started on my spiritual journey. He came along at just the right moment. I also dedicate this book to all the other people in my life who have been like brothers to me. They have also been tremendously inspiring. I offer thanks to Joey, Charlie, Justin, Kirill, Tim, Henrique, and my newest brother,
Ian. I believe that each of these guys will inspire many others.
I also want to acknowledge a few staff members at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati. I thank Jerry and Terri, whose own writings gave me the courage to undertake this book, and marketing specialist/journalist Deb, who showed me that there is a market for stories of goodness.
Finally, I dedicate this to my family for always believing in me and supporting me.
Open your hearts and souls to God. If you seek forgiveness for your sins, treat all people as if they are Christ, and respect the planet, God will shower you with blessings. I honestly believe that and know it to be true. A new world is coming.
Foreword
A year ago my life began to change. The transformation was gradual at first, but in the last few months the changes have been significant and fast. It’s been a year of laughter and tears without a boring moment.
Many people have told me, You should write a book.
Usually when they say this they are referring to my travel adventures. In the last fifteen years I have visited fifty-one countries and all fifty states. I have been blessed with great travel experiences. I also have read dozens of travel essays and travel books. But there’s a big difference between being a world traveler and a world-travel author. I don’t have the wits of Bill Bryson or the attention to detail of Peter Jenkins. And at this point, I can’t recall all of the trips, and I have never kept a journal.
This is a spiritual book. It’s about receiving signs from God and from the spirit world and the impact those signs have had on my life. If you had asked me a year ago where I expected to be, the place I am now would have been my last guess. It’s amazing how one chance encounter can change your life. I will get to that in the third chapter.
CHAPTER 1
A Little Background Information
Growing up, I did not notice anything unusual about my life. I had a typical farm upbringing. My family held fast to traditional values and a strong work ethic. I had two brothers and two sisters and dozens of relatives nearby. We were all close and pulled together to face challenges. We did not have much money, but we always had what we needed. We were a traditional family. My dad worked long hours, and my mother took many side jobs in addition to raising children, tending a garden, and canning enough food for the next millennium.
I greatly enjoyed high school. I got involved with the student council, was class president for a few years, became president of the speech activities club, and was an officer in the Future Farmers of America. I also ended up being class valedictorian, to my surprise and that of many others. I did not consider myself especially smart, although I have a great memory for detail.
College was a different story. I attended a private university, and it was very competitive. I had a tough time earning good grades, although I enjoyed participating in my fraternity and in community service. I also did a domestic mission trip in my senior year that left me with great memories.
I went on to complete two more degrees. I have master’s degrees in social work and in public administration. Most of my career has been spent in the helping professions. I have worked with juvenile probation in Kentucky, as a hospice social worker, a youth minister, and a social worker with Big Brothers Big Sisters. I have always found my work interesting and rewarding.
My spiritual upbringing has been fairly important in my life. I went to church with my family every week as a child and have continued doing so throughout adulthood. I did not consider myself a devout Christian until maybe two years ago, but my family always showed me how to follow the Golden Rule of loving God and neighbor. They modeled it well with our neighbors, and they have always been active in their church and in religious groups. I have enjoyed learning about other religions, but I have always kept my Catholic faith. I let it guide me in my decisions, and I try hard to do the right thing.
My faith was moderate through most of my life. I prayed every day, often for others. I had the same questions that other people have about the meaning of life and about what happens after death. My first encounter with the supernatural or spiritual came in college when a friend from high school died in a car accident. College was seven hours away from my hometown, so I did not attend
