    Hemisphere - September 12th, 2017

Susan looked at her assignment again. She had to find a small business owner in town and interview them to learn how they got started. She had to go meet a stranger at Big Ed’s and ask them personal questions. Oh, boy this would be fun - not!

She pushed the door open to Big Ed’s. There he was in all his cooking glory. He had on a pristine white apron and a matching short sleeve shirt that made his dark skin stand out all the more. He turned his head to see who walked in.

Spotting her, he waived, Susan, good to see you dear. Can I get you a something to drink?

She smiled at the kindly man and shook her head no.

Glancing around the room, she spotted a well dressed elderly man seated in one booth with his hands folded in front of him. She walked over and introduced herself.

Excuse me, are you Mr Burkhardt? My name is Susan.

He popped to his feet like a man much younger. Ah, yes my dear. I am Otto Burkhardt, pleased to meet you. I've been looking forward to our chat.

He waved her into the booth. Once Susan was seated, the waitress arrived. Otto ordered a cup of coffee for himself and Susan asked for a soft drink.

Now, my dear, what would you like to know?

Yes, sir. How did you become the owner of a brewery? And if you don’t mind me asking, where are you from, I can hear you have an accent that isn’t similar to the others from Hemisphere. I’m from Atlanta so I don’t sound like a local either.

The man leaned his head back and laughed. Oh, my dear. I am originally from Pennsylvania. My family descended from Hessian deserters during the Revolutionary War. We spoke German almost exclusively at home. We had a brewery which is where I learned my trade. As to how I became a brewer here in Hemisphere that is a long story.

Otto got a far away look in his eyes as he remembered.

    Road to Hemisphere - October 31st, 1863

Sergeant Otto Burkhardt sighed. The colonel was on the warpath again. He has been looking for any excuse to disturb his men. With his surprise inspection, he was delaying his supply convoy. They were hauling food and beer to the troops on the front lines. The Union army can’t beat the Confederates without hardtack and beer.

Otto wondered why he had left his beloved brewery for the army. That they put him in supply was a miracle in itself. The army wasn’t known for using people in positions they were qualified for.

That the colonel had decided to halt the convoy in Hemisphere was just another one of those things that he vowed to try not to understand. It would bend his mind to the breaking point. They were stopped on the main road of a nothing town that was known for nothing as far as he could tell.

To make matters worse, they stopped out in a pouring rainstorm in the middle of the night. He forced his men to
