Diane Wells Rivers is also a 29 year veteran educator and is presently an Assistant Principal, curriculum author, and educational services consultant.

    We grew up poor, but the richness of the experience led us to succeed in a variety of careers, from business owner to master seamstress, truck driver, banker, nurse, and educator.

    This book is also dedicated to Ron, my husband and our children, Gabriel, Marcus, and Nicholas.

    Introduction

    Herein lie the juicy details of my affair with food, held long before cooking became a nationally televised pastime. I chose the word affair because it embodies my family’s relationship with food: illicit, indulgent, scandalous, and oftentimes hidden from the view of others. Our family loves food, and we usually use food as love.

    Americans’ passion for food continues today, and its legacy will be passed on to our children. This is a testimony of how memories of food sustain our spirit and sense of family and how eating certain foods can elicit many moods.

    From the preparation of the fatted calf to the breaking of bread, we take daily sustenance. Food nourishes our physical bodies and strengthens our cultural fiber. Our choice of foods can be
