      The Widow's War

      Robin dug her toes into the cold, damp sand. Bits of shattered shell mixed with leftover grey-black chunks of burnt driftwood between the glimmering grains. The storm coming in would wash the wood higher, the shell further out to sea. The sand would remain, grinding to dust against each other.

      She lifted her eyes from her toes to the horizon. What she could see of it. Clouds billowed like mountains far out to sea. The curve of the point was still visible but as she stared rain began the slash down from the leading edge of the clouds. In minutes the rain obscured the point two miles away. Soon enough it would be here, to her spot on the sand with the shell and ash from her husband's funeral pyre.

      Three days of storm winds had blown any scent away. The bones were gone, too. Robin had hammered them into dust and then flung them into the surf as it growled and churned the sand. For a second, she'd thought that the sea was spitting him back up at her because a rogue wave rolled up at her, nearly catching her legs and pulling her out to sea to drown.

      If Ikram had gone that way, she wouldn't be raging as hard as the storm.
