"This book is dedicated
my Teachers, visible and invisible,
and my earthly and cosmic family "
Preface
Angels. The film, Wings of Desire, where friendly invisible Angels help the distressed human inhabitants of Berlin, springs to mind; or the choirs of heavenly hierarchies of Angels painted by Guariento of Arpo in Padua, where you see the Angels looking upwards, presumably towards God, but one, by a strange optical illusion, seems to follow you with his eyes, never abandoning you as you go round the room; or else I think of the Angel of Peace that shows Dante the way to Heaven in his Purgatory.
For centuries we humans have imagined beneficial supernatural entities, silent ones, that help us when we are in need. They protect us, enlighten us, and comfort us in difficult times without asking for anything in return. Faced with strange coincidences, unexpected and positive turning points in their lives, an inflow of energy and well-being, many people think of the Angels. Perhaps they exist. Some have even seen them, talked to them, or so they say. We cannot straightforwardly dismiss the idea of supernatural beings who follow the affairs of human beings, above all in this materialistic age, so distracted and breathless. And to those who demand proof of their existence, we can answer that it’s up to them to prove otherwise.
There are plenty of invisible entities and forces. The existence of some, such as electromagnetic waves or the micro-organisms, is proven and quantified (though it was not always so), while that of others, is not, yet. When it comes to Angels, the situation is more complicated since we do not even know where they might be: outside ourselves, somewhere in outer space, or within us, and therefore part of us, as providential powers of the soul?
In any case, the very idea of an angel, as it has been represented through the ages, tells us a lot about ourselves: our secret desires, our intimate fragility, of how sometimes when we feel lonely and lost in the maze of life we would like someone to take us by the hand and to illuminate our path. The precise and detailed exposition that Liliana Fantini’s beautiful book offers us about various Angels not only describes a possible immaterial reality, but it also shows us some of our own spiritual potential.
Sometimes I wonder how we would look in the eyes of Angels. Rather pathetic, I believe, anxious, a bit foolish, and fundamentally vulnerable. Even funny, since, presumably, Angels can see inside our minds and read our most hidden thoughts. And understand how distant at times our most hidden beliefs and sentiments are from our external behaviour.
Seeing ourselves from the Angels point of view I get a strange sense of relief and recalibration when faced with the drama of human affairs. And it makes
