    Clean eating has known many definitions through the years, and they all come from how people define the word clean. Body builders have one definition, your food coach has another, a vegan can surely find a different one, and your doctor will find a new way to define the word as well. Though, the truth is somewhere in between so let’s look at the facts and draw our conclusions:

    A diet often defines a period that has certain food restrictions with the sole purpose of losing weight or fixing a health problem. A diet is short-term thinking, and it provides a short-term fix. But clean eating is quite the opposite – it has to become a lifestyle for it to work, focusing on a long-term purpose rather than seeing just the short-term benefits.

    There are no calorie restrictions. We all know how annoying, frustrating and time-consuming counting calories can be, but clean eating has none of this. Instead, it allows you to eat as much as you want and need to be healthy and have enough energy to do your daily tasks.

    There is no food deprivation. How many times have you been on a diet forbidding you to eat a particular food, ruling out your favorite meat or vegetable, and not even thinking about dessert?! Far too many times! And it’s time to change that! Clean eating is not supposed to be a sacrifice or a chore. It’s about finding healthy alternatives to unhealthy food. Let’s say you love cake – why to give it up?! You can easily find a healthier alternative and enjoy it as much as you would with any other cake!

    You can eat as many times a day as you want. No more eating at certain hours or counting the minutes until you can have another tiny snack. Clean eating doesn’t focus on that – it’s your personal choice how many meals a day you have as long as they are healthy and packed with nutrients, not just calories to keep you full.

    Guidelines are not rules. Unlike diets, clean eating doesn’t have strict rules. Instead, it has what I call guidelines – they are there just to guide you and teach you how to live a healthier life, instead of forcing you to comply with rules, which we all never know works!
