About this ebook

ECG, which stands for Electrocardiography, an electrocardiogram (ECG) is a simple test that can be used to check your heart's rhythm and electrical activity. The process uses electrodes to detect the tiny electrical change on the skin that are arisen by the heart muscle depolarizing with each heartbeat. Also referred to as EKG, the test is performed to record the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time.

The cardiac output is an essential cardiovascular event required sustain blood flow throughout the body. Apart from blood volume and contractile strength, the heart must sustain a regular cycle of relaxation and contraction to serve its underlying purpose. A series of complex electrophysiological events within the cardiac tissues predicate this regularity. These events are generally monitored using a device called an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG). Many prefer EKG to ECG because it's less confusing with EEG, the abbreviated form of electroencephalogram.

Dynamic electrocardiogram monitoring is a standard practice required to provide general anesthesia and deep sedation. Though considerable cardiovascular changes, if occur, can be directly attributed to moderate sedation techniques. For this reason, patients with significant cardiovascular disease are recommended ECG monitoring. Conventional 12 lead ECG process involves placing ten electrodes on the patient's limbs and chest. The 12 leads help measure the overall magnitude of the heart's electrical potential from twelve different angles, which is then recorded over a period of time (usually 10 seconds). This is how the overall magnitude and direction of the heart's electrical depolarization is detected at each moment throughout the cardiac cycle. The graph voltage versus time produced by the process is referred to as an electrocardiogram, which is also abbreviated ECG or EKG.

The electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a noninvasive test that is used to reflect underlying heart conditions by measuring the electrical activity of the heart. By positioning leads (electrical sensing devices) on the body in standardized locations, information about many heart conditions can be learned by looking for characteristic patterns on the EKG.

Finally, I want to say thank you for your downloading. I expect that you can have knowledge about ECG to perform it better in certain time. Enjoy this book!

Electrocardiography Method (ECG/EKG) - Rose Dickens

    Book’s Summary

This book takes a straightforward, systematic approach to ECG interpretation. We have tried to present the subject in an easily digestible form to those setting out in this discipline, without burdening our readers with unnecessary jargon. Each step in the process of recording and interpreting an ECG is presented in sequence, in its own chapter. At the end of each chapter there are a number of activities to help readers practice what they have learned, evaluate their learning and relate their learning to patient scenarios. Answers are provided at the back of the book. You will find a number of words in bold text throughout the book. These are words that may be new to you if you have a limited experience in Cardiology.

We were in awe of the gifted band of nurses and doctors who discussed the mysteries of electrocardiograms (ECGs) in what seemed like an alien tongue when we made our first faltering steps as nurses in coronary care. It was only after we were given an explanation in plain English that ECG interpretation started to make sense and we were able to relate the ECG to the patient.

    Introduction

The first Chapter of the book discusses basic principles of anatomy and physiology, including a review of the heart’s electrical system. The remaining chapters introduce one concept at a time and build on them with each sub sequent chapter. It is not an exhaustive introduction and sacrifices density for clarity.

Each chapter is followed by a practice session of 12-lead EKGs. Upon completion of the book, the reader should be able to confidently work through the entire answer sheet, forming an autonomous useful opinion about a 12-lead EKG. We expect the student to form an opinion on the EKG and then give a clinically meaningful correlation.

The last chapter of the book is a collection of practice EKGs that includes material covered in all the previous chapters. By the end of the book, the reader should have the knowledge and skills to interpret the entire EKG. Each of these includes an analysis by both authors. Another feature of the
