John Gysin was born in Westcliffe-on-Sea/Essex, but spent most of his formative years in Surrey. He was educated at Cranleigh and served for three years in the RAF. He gained wide experience in industry and commerce before he worked for the Diplomatic Service and was appointed Vice Consul (Commercial) in Zurich. He has been teaching English as a sideline since 1961.
