    John M Gysin

    John Gysin was born in Westcliffe-on-Sea/Essex, but spent most of his formative years in Surrey. He was educated at Cranleigh and served for three years in the RAF. He gained wide experience in industry and commerce before he worked for the Diplomatic Service and was appointed Vice Consul (Commercial) in Zurich. He has been teaching English as a sideline since 1961.

      The wonderful little book that rightly claims to be English Figures of Speech contains the rhetorical figures, the schemes and tropes, you might expect and need in your everyday world of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Yet it goes happily beyond its ‘figures,’ covering topics from literary genres (e.g. Epos, Fables, Homily) to grammar (Split infinitives), to frequent and sometimes simply misused words (Dichotomy, Empiricism).
