It was a beautiful day, the smell of fresh cut grass filled the air and the sun was shining so bright. It was the first time in days, in which it hadn’t rained. The streets were finally dry, a perfect day! I needed a one-day break, from life. I wish I would have known then, what I know now. That one-day off has turned into almost three years. But, I had grown up so quickly. I had already served for the United States Army as a 92M. I was now working full time as a nanny and studying nursing at J. Sargent Reynolds community college. At the age of 20, I had purchased my first home! It was gorgeous! Gorgeous green siding with red window shutters, it was 1600 sqft with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.

No one I knew that was my age; had done that; everyone was partying and living life. Not worrying about carpeting their home or tiling their backsplash, into a sorority or a fraternity. Simply hoping that they wouldn’t get caught for underage drinking. They were living the life of a typical 20 year old. But, I was no typical 20 year old. I felt like I was extremely mature for my age, doing things that people twice my age hadn’t done before. I was stepping into a commitment, by signing the loan agreement to turn the key into my new home.

Being in college was amazing! I had made a wonderful friend, Cherise. We were in Anatomy and Physiology together, which was taught by whom I consider to be the best teacher of all times, her name, was Dr. Oteilla Vines. There were some classes I could not stand in college, i.e. math. But, anatomy and physiology was a class that I loved! Cherise and I took frequent smoke breaks together and also built a wonderful friendship together. It was nice, being able to find time
