About this ebook

The first Marcy story was written to help my own second grader
confront issues surrounding disorganization. The second story
was created to help her deal with a classroom bully. That story
was read by me to her class and received so well that it was
followed, by popular demand, by twenty more. The series
developed as the wishes, fears and frustrations of my daughter's
classmates, (and of several teachers), were reflected by Marcy
who handled the problems they inspired.

As my daughter grew, the Marcy stories served to remind her of
many personal accomplishments. Then, once my younger
daughter entered second grade, she was comforted by the stories
until she began to face difficulties not yet handled by Marcy.
Suddenly, Marcy had to discover a whole bunch of new
adventures both in school and during summer sleep away camp.

This book is geared towards first through third graders and has
been piloted to students 7-10 years of age. It is a read aloud
"imagination series" and intended to provide an interactive
reading experience. Students are encouraged to see Marcy
through their own eyes, as Marcy has neither race nor religion of
her own.

    About The Author

Many thanks to my parents Dr. Daniel Cohen and Mrs. Nita Vilk-Cohen for their tireless guidance and patience as Marcy struggled to become the best she could be.

I owe an additional debt of gratitude to my husband, Eitan, for his loving support and encouragement.

The 1996-2002 portion of this series is dedicated to Michelle, Jessica and AC, (Mrs. Ann Carol Claudet) as well as to Mrs. Claudet’s second grade classes of 1996 and 2001/02 of Pawling Elementary. It was the encouragement and support of Michelle, Jessica, Mrs. Claudet and her students that helped to nourish Marcy throughout her growth and development.

    Marcy’s Thinking Time

Hi, my name is Marcy and I love to play outside.

I have a favorite rock out front-

    Behind it I can hide.

    Sometimes I look for flowers,

And I love to watch them grow.

I love to listen to the birds as they sing, sweet and low.

    Nature is so gentle,

Although sometimes it seems cruel …

Like yesterday I saw a sad thing just outside my school.

I’m in second grade and when we go out after lunch,

I like to sit beneath my tree …

I like it a whole bunch!

Well last week I saw three blue eggs in one small nest I found . .

Then suddenly, just two were there.

One fell out-smashed on the ground.

I wonder how come nature does that?

    Why is it so cruel?

I simply do not understand a lot of nature’s rules!

I have many questions everyday inside my mind-

And I am sure as I grow up, the answers I will find.

    Do you have many questions?

    Do you like nature, too?

Do you play games or sit on rocks?

    What’s favorite for you?

    Marcy Improves Herself

Everything looked okay on the outside. Marcy’s room was mostly neat. Her bed was mostly made. Her clothing was mostly picked up from the floor. Yup. Everything looked mostly okay to Marcy.

Marcy is a sweet little girl who loves to draw pictures and play hide-and-seek. But, she has a few small problems. First, the bus usually comes before she is done with breakfast, and it has to wait for her almost every single day. Second, the teacher usually begins reading the first spelling word before Marcy finishes numbering her page. Third, she has a habit of not reading the instructions on her math tests. So, even though she does know how to add and subtract, because she sometimes doesn’t read the problems carefully, she often gets the wrong answer. And finally, she usually forgets to bring her composition book home until the last day before she has to study for a test.

Marcy is a smart girl. She just has to learn a few important lessons. So, guess what she finally decided to do …

One day Marcy made up her mind. She looked at her reflection in the mirror over her dresser and said:

Hello Me. It is time to stop being late and forgetful, and it is certainly time to learn how to listen carefully to instructions. So, today I want to have an on-time, pay attention and good memory day.

Breakfast time! called her mother from the kitchen. Marcy knew it was time to get dressed. Can you guess what happened?

Marcy couldn’t decide what to wear to school. After a while of searching through her sock drawer, she finally found two matching socks. My goodness, she thought. I can make this easier for myself if I match my socks up the night before. Even better, I can pick out my whole outfit before I go to bed! That way, I won’t have to rush in the morning! Marcy was so proud of herself for figuring this out.

Then, once she was dressed, she hurried to eat her oatmeal while watching the clock carefully. The bus always arrived at 8:05 A.M. It was four minutes after eight as she swallowed the last spoonful.

Marcy kissed her puppy, kitten, sister, and mom good-bye, then dashed out the door to the bus. Can you guess what she discovered when she got there?

The bus was just pulling up to her stop. Wow! she thought. It didn’t have to wait for me at all! That made Marcy happy because she knew she tried hard to be on time and she did it.

Tomorrow, she thought, I will see if I can finish my breakfast by 8:00 A.M. so I can get to my stop even before the bus does! It became a game she played with herself. And it was such fun. She decided to watch the clock while she ate breakfast from that morning on. You know, she thought to herself, if the bus arrives a little early tomorrow and I’m not at the bus stop, as long as I’m ready to walk out by 8:00 A.M. I’ll know I did my best and I’ll be very very proud of myself.

That afternoon, just before Mrs. C asked the class to take out their red marble spelling books from their desks, Marcy reminded herself to listen very carefully. She took out her book once the teacher told the class to. Then, just after the teacher said Okay, class. Clear your desks of everything but a pencil and your spelling book, open your book to a clean page and fold that page in half guess what Marcy did?

She folded the page perfectly and then listened carefully for the next instructions. Even though she thought she knew what the teacher was about to say next, she listened to be sure. Can you guess what the teacher said next? She said, All right, now write your name and the date at the top. And just as Marcy began to do that, something awful happened. Marcy started erasing and rewriting the letters in her name, and the numbers of the date, until she was so busy erasing and rewriting that she absolutely forgot to listen for the next instructions. What do you suppose happened next?

When the teacher said Okay, class. Number from one to twelve. Skip a space between each number. You may write eleven and twelve on the other side, Marcy wasn’t listening. Can you guess why? She was writing and erasing her name! And, by the time she was finally satisfied with the way she corrected her name and the date, the teacher was already reading the first word and sentence for the class to copy! Oh no, thought Marcy. I haven’t even numbered my page yet! So, she hurried up to write number one. She wrote the spelling word, then listened as she numbered the rest of the page.

Suddenly Marcy realized "I spend way too much time erasing and rewriting my name and the date. I can fix that by just being careful how I write my
