Chapter 1: You Are What You Eat
In the United States today, over sixty percent of adults are overweight. As recently as the 1950’s, that number was half of what it is in 2014. Why is this? Sometimes, the response to that question is long and complicated, but this section will discuss some reasons for the dramatic increase in obesity, and what you can do to counteract them.
Perhaps the most obvious difference between the 1950’s and 2014 is that so many jobs are sedentary. The opportunities of you spending most of your time sitting at your computer are a very high possibility. You might get up to get coffee or to chat with a colleague, but most of the time you’re sitting, not standing. You may go to the gym or go for a walk, but when you’re at home, you are probably sitting too –in front of the television, or in front of the computer. Time goes by fast, so it wasn’t that long ago that most jobs –and most lives –were highly physical. Your ancestors may have been farmers, or tradesmen. They spent their days in hard physical labor, not sitting at a
