      Nightshift nurses are a different breed. We look at the world through sleep-deprived eyes and a warped sense of humor. We’re cranky, quirky, and the best damn nurses you could hope for. I’m turning the corner on my third year in the ER where my mornings start at sundown and the dregs of humanity rise from their dark corners.

      By midnight, when the rest of the world is sleeping, the ER is alive as the creatures of the night come to seek help with everything from heart attacks to gunshots to sniffles and splinters. They all find their way through our front doors.

      I knew tonight was going to be extra fun as I headed in under a bright, full moon. There was something about the pull of the moon that brought out the crazy in people. As I threaded my way through the already full lobby, it confirmed my suspicions. I sighed as I grabbed my stethoscope and pen - time to get my game face on.

      Rachel was waiting for me at the assignment board. She looked perky and well-rested just finishing a good stretch of days off - exactly opposite of me. I knew the circles under my eyes were a dark shade of violet. I could almost tell how many days in a row I’d been on by the shade of purple ringing my eyes. It was my last night of a seven-day stretch. I glowered at Rachel, who tempered her brightness by a degree or two.

      Hey, Libby. You’ve got triage tonight. It’s going be nuts, and I need you out there, she said to me and slipped a handful of chocolate into my scrub top pocket. Rachel was an excellent charge nurse and knew how to put her people where they would do the best for the team. She also knew that I could be bribed with chocolate to do just about anything.

      I took a piece out of my pocket- peanut butter cups. For these, I’d dance naked in the lobby if she asked me to. Right. Here we go, I muttered, resigned to my fate. I turned to go and swept my gaze automatically over the doctor’s desk. It was a decent group tonight. My eye caught on a new face. Rachel, who’s he?
