About this ebook
Are you tired of being overwhelmed, depressed and feeling out of control in your life ?
"If I told you that it is possible to clear the way towards making positive changes, is that something that would interest you?"
If you answered yes to both of these questions, then this book is for you. It will provide you with an awareness of different types of clutter that exist that may be weighing you and your family down.
"Release The Clutter" Offers you a holistic approach to clearing the clutter in your life… You will:
- Gain clarity of different types of external and internal clutter;
- Realize how clutter is affecting you;
- Learn how to let go of your clutter in a practical yet holistic manner;
- Get organized, keep clutter away and maintain that order for years to come.
Through the journey of writing this book one of the life lessons I have learned is that unless I change something within me...nothing changes for me. It is my mind, emotions, spirit and my body that affect the outcome of any situation. My actions reflect my internal beliefs, and no amount of outside learning can be effective for me until I learn to hear myself and change my programming.
This book is not just another "how to" book; it is mine and my clients stories on how we moved forward through the difficult and painful task of changing our programming to effect lasting change. It is about identifying what we are thinking about and being able to sort through the internal and external clutter to release that which no longer serves us.
As you read this book I ask that you keep an open mind to the ideas and stories. Stay focused on your thoughts as in my experience the things that disturb me the most are the ones that block my progress: they are my triggers. By taking the time to think about these triggers, I have been able to remove the power those thoughts had on my actions, in effect changing my results.
You will only get out of this book what you put into action for yourself. I cannot do the work for you, but hope that my words inspire you to take action. I promise you that if you put the effort into doing the challenges in each chapter, your life will shift and you will move forward towards positive change.
"No person, no place, and no thing has any power over us, for 'we' are the only thinkers in our mind. When we create peace and harmony and balance in our minds, we will find it in our lives." ― Louise L. Hay

How Clutter Affects You
In 2005, I was at a crossroads in my life. I had just finished a contract as a fundraiser project coordinator for a local charity and I was looking for my next adventure. I knew for certain that working in another fundraising capacity was not it! I was kind of tired of people running the other way when I came around for fear I would ask them for money or help, so I knew I needed to look for something new – something I could be passionate about.
At the time my kids were ten and seven years old respectively and they had been a priority for the past ten years of my life. I love my kids and hubby, and being a mom and wife was number one in my books. Family is and always will be important, but for me I always needed to have something of my own to do... to keep my own identity alive. Almost any mom can attest that their own identity as a person can quickly disappear when dealing with the demands of motherhood and family life.
One day as I was doing my domestic goddess duties of washing dishes with the TV on in the background for company, there on the screen came my true calling... and my next adventure. Vicki Gabereau was interviewing a professional organizer on her morning talk show on CBC television. Imagine my surprise and excitement to know my natural abilities of organizing and teaching could be turned into a career. Call me excited!! And so began the adventures of making my company Kaos Solutions into a reality.
I used my fundraising skills to do some research, got myself some funding, joined the Professional Organizers in Canada Association (POC), went away to Montreal to get some training, and went to my first POC conference in Toronto to meet and learn from the people who were already in the business. Then I put my shingle up so to speak, called myself a professional organizer, and waited for my first client to show up.
And she did.
Jann, my first client was a doozy. As the saying goes, Go big or go home
right? Well, this wasn’t a tiny little closet organization – this was a whole house full of closets, each of them jammed packed with every piece of clothing Jann had ever owned since she was 17... and she was now in her 40's! Every closet was bursting to overflowing, top to bottom, wall to wall, with clothes and accessories she’d held onto for years and years. Now to make this even a more fun and challenging job, she had a story to tell about EVERY item. She knew where she bought it, who she was with at the time of purchase, and what was going on in her life at that moment. You see, her clothes were her scrapbook, her mementos, her entire life story! Wow! I sure took on a huge responsibility for my first client!
One piece of Jann's clothing in particular became what I call my challenge point.
This is the stage when a client and myself are in the purge mode and we hit the proverbial brick wall – something has to give in order for the client to start letting go of their stuff.
This point happened to involve the most beautiful turquoise leather suit I’d ever seen. Unfortunately, this suit would have been the bomb
in the 80's with its big poufy shoulders and all the 80's glamour, but it was 2006! As I held it up to her to get her to tell me if it was to be placed in the to go
pile or the to keep
one (up to that point next to nothing was in the to go
pile I might add), she sighed and told me how her husband had bought it for her on their fifth wedding anniversary in San Diego while they were on a wonderful trip. This is when I reminded her that she had been married for fifteen years, divorced for over ten years, and that this outfit was over twenty years old. I knew the answer was a no for her to let go of that suit, but I also understood it was important for her to come to her own conclusion about letting it go. I had to ask her this question: was she SERIOUSLY ever going to wear that suit again? I then asked her if we could just take a picture of it as a memento of a great time and place and then put it in the to go
pile and move one. Sheesh! (I must admit ten years ago I may not be as smooth as I am now when dealing with clients who cannot part with anything, so I might have been a bit snappish back then. HA!)
Keep in mind that this was my very first client and this is when my first ever client stormed out of the room on me without saying another word. Thinking she just needed time to cool off and praying I didn't get fired from my first job in my first week in business, I puttered around the room, moving piles from one area to
