    Chapter 1: The Basics

    What is a Ketogenic Diet?

A ketogenic eiet, also called simply as keto diet, is a kind of diet that is low in carbohydrates and high in fats. This kind of diet involves reducing your carb intake significantly and replacing it with fat. This diet allows the production of ketones in the liver which can be used as energy. A keto diet turns the body into a fat-burning machine and also offers numerous health benefits.

Just like other low-carb diets, a keto diet follows the same concept of caloric reduction where the intake of calories is strictly cut down to reach the state of ketosis.

A low-carb diet like the keto diet helps to prevent the body from producing too much glucose. As you may already know, glucose is one of the easiest sources that the body uses for energy. Insulin is responsible for breaking down this glucose and carrying it around the body. When this occurs, the glucose gets consumed by the body but keeps the fats stored, and this is not good especially if you want to lose weight. When you go on a ketogenic diet, your body gets to function and run on its fat reserve, which turns your body into an effective and powerful fat-burning machine.

    What is Ketosis?

Ketosis is the state where the body runs on its fat reserve and becomes effective and efficient in burning fat. Ketosis is not something that you induce or create artificially. Rather, it is a natural process of the body. It is the state that the body normally undergoes when the food intake is low. It is in this state when the body produces ketones. Ketones are produced as fats break down in the liver. It is the objective of a keto diet for your body to reach and stay in this state, which is the state of ketosis. Keep in mind that in a keto diet, you do not reach this state by starving yourself of calories. Rather, you achieve ketosis by starving yourself of carbohydrates.

Ketogenic Diet vs. Other Low-Carb Diets

A ketogenic diet is also a low-carb diet. However, unlike other low-carb diets, a keto diet is high in fat. Fat can satiate the body and prevent you from starving. Low-carb diets may also vary from person to person as to how much carbohydrates they take. For some people, even 300g of carbohydrates in a day can still be considered as a low-carb diet. A keto diet essentially involves a drastic lowering of carb intake. On average, the suggested carb intake should not be higher than 50g. Again, do not worry about starving since a keto diet is also a diet that is high in fat. While many low-carb diets mainly rely on the deficit between the intake of calories and the calories that get burned in a day, a ketogenic diet makes use of the state of ketosis, which is the optimal state for burning fat. Last but not least, unlike many low-carb diets that are unhealthy and cannot be carried on for an extended period of time, a ketogenic diet is healthy and safe provided that you use it properly.
