Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Corgis - Susanne Saben

    List

    CHAPTER 1

    Introduction

At first glance, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi may look a little strange. After all, his legs seem too short for his body and his ears are massive on his head. This small, stubby-legged breed may not look particularly impressive, but if you see him in action you will quickly change your mind. Developed for herding, the Corgi is a bold, intelligent, and active breed – just wait until you see him in action!

The name Corgi actually applies to two separate breeds – the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Though these two dogs come from the same early breeding stock, they are unique enough to be recognized separately by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and other major breed organizations. Both are some of the smallest herding breeds out there, but their diminutive size doesn’t stop them from getting the job done.

Though Corgis were originally bred for herding, their friendly personality and upbeat temperament makes them a great choice for families. Their active and excitable nature sometimes makes them a little tricky to train, but they are highly affectionate, and they love to spend time with family. They are also surprisingly skilled in dog sports like agility and flyball. Simply put, these little dogs have a lot to offer, and they are definitely worthy of your consideration!

Speaking as an experienced Pembroke Welsh Corgi owner, I can say in all honesty that this is one of the best dog breeds I have ever encountered. Not only are these little dogs full of life and love, but they are an absolute joy to have around the house – life is never dull with a Corgi! Choosing to bring home my own Corgi puppy was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and it was the inspiration for me to write this book.

If you’ve been thinking about getting a Corgi, or if you’re simply curious to learn more about the breed, you have come to the right place! In this book you’ll learn everything you need to know about the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, including the differences from the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, so you can determine whether this is the right breed for you. We’ll cover everything from breed basics to choosing a puppy, preparing your home, and training your new Corgi.

By the time you finish this book, you’ll be fully prepared to welcome a Corgi puppy into your home, and you will be eager to do so! I invite you to keep reading now to discover just what makes the Pembroke Welsh Corgi breed so wonderful. Now, let’s get started!
