Death in Clermont-Ferrand
It was a beautiful summer day in Clermont-Ferrand. A gentle wind was playing with a piece of cloth in the colours of the French tricolour, along with the flags of the other nations on poles scattered around the stands. In front of the pit lane The Gendarmerie Nationale were walking up and down.
The golden rays of the sun were reflecting from the bodies of the Formula One race cars. The spectators shielding their eyes against it as they watched, the cars sped down the hill like frenzied raptors screaming toward their target—the finishing straight, where the drivers would then have to slam on the brakes just before the left-hand bend.
People waved to the racers, while passionately talking among themselves. The cars lined up quite obediently and in orderly fashion, only to accelerate quickly up the hill and become lost beyond the horizon. For a short moment you could see the cars dart around a concrete wall, which lead onto a short straight stretch in front of Le Belvedère, then a brief moment of calm, followed by yet another series of risky bends.
However, the most difficult part still lay ahead. As the drivers accelerated again, they went down the hill, towards the town. It is here where Les Jumeaux can be found: a series of two narrow bends, so long—so unnecessarily long—that the racers believe those turns are never going to end. After that is a short, accelerated descent into a straight, which ends with a double right-hand bend called Gravenoire. A driver had to really keep his speed here and not slow down. After a few more kilometres of climbing, the racing cars would reach the final part of the circuit—and more prolonged bends.
But one of the single-seater cars never reached this point. The car suddenly flew alongside the spectators and left the track at full speed, hitting the rails hard with a loud, metallic BANG. The car was thrown back, rolled over and came to a stop. Monopost burst into flames, some pieces flying through the air. The fire was not only consuming the ill-fated car but also the petrol trail it had left behind.
Spectators could clearly see the head of the driver
