How to Talk to People - Nathan Ferrari
Introduction
Are you shy? Do you dread speaking to anyone you do not know? Do you want to change careers but are afraid to take the first step? Terrified of speaking in public? Then How to Talk to People is for you. Following the tips in this book will help you destroy shyness, increase your self-esteem, use your charisma and magnetism to begin the path to a better life. Let’s get started.
How do we talk to those around us? Do we walk up to our boss, slap him/her on the shoulder and say, How ya doing today dude?
Or ask our kids, Did you have a productive day at school today?
Probably not. Each relationship requires different forms of communication, especially if we want to keep our jobs. Communication is another way of describing how we talk to people. For some of us, good communication skills are a necessity to managing our businesses and lives.
At around 18 months we begin to speak, and by the time we’re two years old we know around 50 words. Though we can speak, we really do not know how to put them together to form proper sentences. Some children may have delayed speech ability either from a cognitive or physical issue. Speech therapy can correct many of these delays.
By the time we reach adulthood, our ability not only to speak but to communicate have reached optimum levels. However, some personality traits make it difficult to initiate or maintain conversations. Shyness, fear, and anxiety can all lead to an inability to talk to people.
Shyness as a child; hiding behind Mom or Dad, is cute and most people grow out of it. For some, shyness lasts into adulthood and become a hurdle in everyday life. By definition, shyness is feelings of awkwardness when engaging with others, particularly new or unfamiliar people. Being shy can also cause physical symptoms such as a pounding heart, severe sweating, and nausea. Typically, adult shyness is a characteristic of those with very low self-esteem. Throughout the course of this book, we’ll discuss how to build self-confidence and hopefully combat shyness. We will also discover what charisma and personal magnetism are, and the role each plays in effective communication.
The last Chapter will bring all the techniques we learned previously together to help us build new relationships and improve existing ones. The inability to talk to our loved ones can destroy very intimate relationships. Not using the proper communication techniques at work can put us in the unemployment line. Not having self-esteem and charisma can cost us opportunities in our lives both professionally and personally. We’ll learn to develop and utilize personal magnetism to draw people to us and make communication even easier.
Chapter 1: Effective Communication
What is Communication?
Communication, simply put, is the exchange of ideas. We can exchange ideas in various ways, written, nonverbal, visual and verbal. Let’s take a look at each one to better understand the dynamics of communication.
Written: Written communication includes things like this book, emails, letters, and reports. Anything that can be read is considered written communication. A good part of talking to people is knowing how to put words together as clearly as possible so those who read them can understand and reply to you as effectively as possible. Thanks to the internet, written communication ranks #1 as the most used type of communication in the world today. This is due to text messaging among the population today.
Nonverbal: Nonverbal communication can be gestures; good and bad, sign language, the way we dress, how we present ourselves (jewelry style of dress and body language) and even
