About this ebook

A Guide to Effective Self-Publishing.

Anyone who plans to publish a book needs the technical information neatly presented in layman’s terms. It is important to know the basics of electronic publishing.

Discover the sound techniques needed for producing an effective book cover that works well as a thumbnail online. Read how effectively contrast and bold fonts draw attention to your book long before the buyer views your book’s page.

The ‘editing’ is a vital stage of any publication. Learn how to edit your own manuscript on a tight budget. Use the provided lists of ‘commonly misspelt words’ and add your own. Start writing more efficiently and avoid the issue of incorrectly spelt words that are replaced with properly spelt, but incorrect words.

Once understood, metatags can accomplish many feats and you can speed up their implementation with the help of a template.

This book is about how to package your product in the best possible way so that it looks polished and professional. It is not a get rich quick scheme, or a learn ‘how to write’ manual.

You will learn how to:

- produce effective book covers that also work as thumbnails,

- create lists and automata to check for common typos,

- improve your workflow during both writing and publication,

- format your book in a logical layout for electronic distribution,

- format your book for print following established tradition,

- apply metatags to your images and PDF files with a template,

- choose the correct genres and keywords for your metatags,

- select an appropriate nom de plume,

- use social media correctly,

- locate invaluable software and tools.

Thank you to all my friends who stick by me even when I begin to doubt my abilities, and often my sanity. We all need a crazy friend in life, and I fear I am that very person.

To Eddie, my wonderful editor, just when I thought my writing had improved dramatically; you find new ways to polish the words to a new gleam. Your touch takes all my writing just a little further, and makes me look good. No author can ask for more.

To all those that I am yet to meet, please stop by on Facebook. ‘We’ll chat’.

The fonts that adorn this book are as follows:

Font Awesome for the icons used on the cover, and in the book content.

If you spot the odd typo in my book, I would be grateful if you could send me a message to let me know, and I will make a correction. I have a very small team that assist me in publishing, and we are only human, so some errors may persist.

At the end of this book is an ‘about the author’ page with different ways to contact me. I welcome any discussion of my writing. Do you have any questions or suggestions? I would love to hear them.

    Preface

This book isnot a ‘get rich even quicker’ guide. I am sure that we can all agree that there are more than enough of those, and some of them even work — to a degree. It is also not a ‘how to write’ manual. It is assumed that the reader is already proficient in his or her writing skills and is looking to publish. This book will guide the emerging author in producing and packaging the finished product in a manner conducive to success.

This handbook is designed to help those on a tight budget, or authors who are just starting out, in polishing the final product. It is intended for these very intrepid individuals who want to learn how to self-publish, and achieve great results.

This guide is also not filled with delicious and revealing secrets, plump with promise but little substance. If you have the time, and the patience, you can glean this wealth of knowledge from the Internet. It is all there for those that seek it. If you do not have the temperament, then read this book. You will be glad you did.

The only topics contained within this book are those that I know about, so you may feel it is lacking in some areas. There is no faux material or chapter padding to feign substance. This is the sum of all the information that I have learnt through my own research, practice, and more importantly, by trial, and a great deal of error. My aim is to share vital information that will result in a pleasing product, be it electronic or in print.

Some of the information presented is in a simplified manner, and further research may be required by the reader. I do not pretend to be an expert on all technical issues, and thus, I encourage everyone to seek the advice of those who are far more knowledgeable. For the most part, I have tried to keep my explanations moderate enough for the reader to understand, but not too involved as to strike fear into his or her heart. Be strong! It is not nearly as confusing as it may appear on the surface.

I will be discussing a varied range of subjects, such as how to format your documents for electronic books and print, important concepts to bear in mind for your covers, and why you may need to seek the services of a professional. Be realistic and see how much you can do yourself, if you cannot afford the cost at the outset.

I want to make it clear that ‘cheap’ is not always better, and it regularly yields a ‘cheap’ product. This is your book, your pride and joy, and your first born — okay, perhaps not your first born, but it deserves similar affection and handling.

The drive to keep costs down leads many people to assume they can actually do it all themselves.

Sometimes one must ask if they are doing themselves an injustice in the process. I believe that I have made my point. If you want people to buy your book, you must be willing to invest in it yourself, be it financially where needed, or through your valuable time and effort.

I cannot give the reader a crash course in graphic design in one chapter. Similarly, I also cannot teach people HTML and style sheets in order to produce an electronic book. It is an unrealistic expectation. The objective of this book is to point you in the right direction. Whether you are publishing it yourself, or paying someone to provide the required services, it is important that you make informed decisions regarding your publication, electronic or printed.

If you are reading this book on a greyscale screen such as an E-ink device, you may want to check some of the images in the ‘Get It Covered’ chapter on a colour monitor. Mostly, it should not detract from understanding the flow of each section. You may also find that some pages have blank spaces on their lower half. This is not an error, and it is done in order to keep the information in some of the ‘content boxes’ from spilling over onto a new page.

Lastly, I do provide many of the services mentioned in these chapters and you are welcome to contact me to discuss your needs. I understand that not every author is also a graphic designer or an electronic book expert. A wise person accepts his or her own limitations, and knows when to hire a specialist.

    Takeaways:

Learn to do things yourself even if you pay some else to do them for you.

Cheap often costs you readers and fans.

There is no shortcut to quality.

    Name The Plumage

Whether you make use of your real name in your publications or not, there is a variety of reasons in favour of either choice. The main purpose of a nom de plume is persistently thought of as a way to write wickedly scandalous books without anyone ever finding out about it. There are some solid motivations to publish under a fictitious name other than merely to distribute erotica online.

In essence, a pen name or a nom de plume is the same thing, but the latter always reminds me of a cabaret with a sweeping chorus line of girls bedecked with masses of colourful feathers, hence the title of this chapter. Pen names are commonly perceived by the author as more interesting or exciting than the name on their birth certificate. It also helps to avoid the endlessly similar names on the world’s list of authors. Of course, some emerging authors actually choose a similar nom
