There are a lot of foods you miss out on when you can't eat dairy, soy, gluten, egg, meat, or nuts. For example, what do you dollop on a baked potato if sour cream is off the menu because you can't eat dairy? What do you stir through coleslaw if you can't have traditional mayonnaise due to an egg sensitivity?
Additionally, sushi and cold rolls aren't as fun when you can't have soy sauce. Not to mention enjoying nachos is difficult when you can't eat avocados or cheese.
The Little Book of Allergy-Friendly Tasty Toppings, by the creators of the Australian free-from online cooking show Alternative Chef Kitchen offers some alternatives for those with allergies to many everyday ingredients. The alternatives in this book include:
Four different sour cream alternatives (made with soy, sunflower seeds, cashews, and one very untraditional option made with butter beans). A soy-free cold roll/sushi dipping sauce alternative. Some tasty toppings for tacos and baked potato including a simple salsa, two guacamole options, easy-to-make taco seasonings, and raw BBQ onions. Four mayonnaise alternatives (a traditional egg mayonnaise, three egg-free options). Lastly, some tasty simple salad dressings that are also yummy on steamed veggies.
The book has a detailed "Extra Resources" section and video footage to support the recipes. Furthermore, beginner free-from cooks will benefit from a comprehensive list explaining the less common ingredients and where to buy them as well as descriptions of the techniques used to help turn the foods you "can eat" into foods you "want to eat."

DIFFERENT GUIDELINES IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES
Different countries have different food classifications and guidelines about the suitability of certain foods for people with different food sensitivities. Coconut and oats are two examples (see below) but there may be more so please follow the advice of your doctor. If you have ANY uncertainty about which foods are suitable for your diet, you should discuss this with your doctor.
COCONUT AND OATS
With regard to coconut and oats, this book follows the guidelines within Australia. In Australia oats are not considered gluten-free and coconut is generally considered suitable for people avoiding tree nuts (unless they have a coconut allergy, or have been advised to avoid coconut by their doctor). So when it comes to the suitability of coconut and oats for yourself or your child, ALWAYS follow your doctor's advice, and if you are cooking for someone else, always check with them first.
RECIPES CONTAINING EGG OR HONEY
Recipes containing raw egg are not suitable for pregnant women, infants, the elderly, or people with compromised immune systems.
In Australia Honey is not suitable for children under 1 year of age and in some countries, it is not recommended for children under 2.
ALWAYS CHECK INGREDIENTS ARE SUITABLE FOR YOUR DIET
Our recipes use ingredients that may be naturally free from certain foods or allergens, however naturally free from
isn't the same as free from all traces of a particular allergen
; therefore, if you have or are cooking for someone with an allergy or someone with coeliac disease, you will need to check all ingredients that you use have been prepared and packaged in an appropriately allergen free facility.
If you are cooking for yourself or your child and you are uncertain whether or not an ingredient, packaged option, or recipe is suitable for your needs, you should discuss this with your doctor.
If you are cooking for someone else check with the person you are cooking for to ensure that the recipe and ingredients are suitable for their needs.
This recipe book is intended to provide recipe ideas for people who have been diagnosed with a food sensitivity (e.g. food allergy, food intolerance, or other food sensitivity) or for those who have made a lifestyle decision to exclude animal products like dairy, egg, and meat from their diet.
If you suspect you or your child has a food sensitivity, you should discuss this with your doctor.
The information in this book is not intended to replace the advice of your doctor or to be a substitute for seeking medical advice.
