Reviews for Quick and Clever Watercolour Pencils
4 ratings1 review
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5If you already have experience with drawing and you can learn from several picture diagrams, then this is the book for you. However, there really aren't many techniques explained for watercolor pencils in here. For example, while he talks about making a wash, Mr. Evans does not explain that you should start by wetting the lightest area of tone first and then work into your darker tones. He also doesn't explain that you can layer watercolor pencils with several washes (maybe because at the time of writing, the pencils he used didn't make this possible). Or that you can wet the paper and then shave small bits of pencil off to create a flecked pattern, etc. There's just a lot of technique missing here. Also, the pictures/diagrams are photographed from strange skewed angles and are super cropped. So even referring to these for reference will be difficult. Which is really too bad, because he has some lovely sketches in the book. If nothing else, you'll be encouraged to get out and give it a go because he makes it SOUND easy and low-pressure. But as far as instruction goes, there are much better books out there (like Cathy Johnson's book, or Gary Greene's book).
