Dear axolotl: Why do you have feathers growing out of your head? Axolotl: They aren't feathers—they're gills! They let me breathe underwater.
Let's face it. Even as babies, we humans pay close attention to faces. Observing another person's features and expressions tells us whether they are happy, angry, excited, or sad. And when we look at an animal, it's hard not to imagine that its face is communicating human feelings. This isn't true, of course. Squinty eyes, an upturned mouth, or another odd expression is probably there because, in some way, it helps that animal survive.      Packed with many cool facts and visuals on where certain animals live and what they eat, this book captures twenty-five humorous—and very true—explanations of why animals look the way they do in order to exist in this world.

A hilarious book about the fun variety of animals our world is home to! With a great sense of humor Jenkins and Page explain the oddities that are seen in the faces and bodies of some animals. I think any age of reader can enjoy the illustrations (while parents do their own narrating) and I think older kids can enjoy the text too. While this book is funny and playful, it's also very informative and I learned a lot! We could use it in a 4th grade science lesson and students could also add their own creature features from an animal of their own choosing. They could do some simple research, draw their own picture, write some text, and hang it on the classroom wall.

A close up on 25 animals and why they have a unique feature.

Another superb nature book from these consistently excellent husband and wife collaborators.

I really like the question-answer format of this book. It is also a way to teach first-person point of view since the answers to the questions come from the animals themselves.

I really liked the approach Jenkins and Page took with this book. Each page contains a question about the way the animal looks, and then the animal answers the question. This would be a great book to accompany a science lesson. I also think children would be very intrigued by it.

This would be a great book to get students thinking about qualitative data. They can begin making observations about the different animal features talked about within the book.
