    A note on using this Common Worship EPUB edition

    This Common Worship eBook is designed for use on any device able to read EPUB electronic books, such as an iPad using iBooks, or a Nook or Kobo eReader.

    The following notes on navigating this publication on an eReader may be helpful, bearing in mind that using a prayer book is likely to be quite different to the experience of reading a novel or similar.

    Finding your way around easily

    ♦  The Contents list contains links to each section of the book.

    ♦  You can access the Contents list from any section in the book by clicking on the underlined main heading.

    ♦  You will also find underlined cross-reference links – e.g. from a service to the text of The Lord’s Prayer. Click on the underlined ‘here’ to go to The Lord’s Prayer. When you have finished reading The Lord’s Prayer, press the Back button to return to the section you have just left.

    ♦  Selecting the Menu will also give you the option to search the text for a particular word or phrase.

    Personalizing your Common Worship eBook

    ♦  You can bookmark particular sections to mark a place to which you want to return (in much the same way as you might use a ribbon in a printed liturgical book). Click on the bookmark icon in the menu bar.

    ♦  You can also add a note or highlight a particular section with a note, which may be helpful when planning worship or studying. Check the user guide for your device/eReader application for how to do this.

    Canon B 3 provides that decisions as to which of the authorized services are to be used (other than occasional offices) shall be taken jointly by the incumbent and the parochial church council. ¶    Introduction

    Pastoral care is at the heart of the Church’s mission and ministry. All Christians are called to respond in Christ’s name to the needs of their brothers and sisters. The spiritual care of the troubled, sick, dying and bereaved, as well as those who are unable to attend public worship regularly, is a priority for ordained and lay ministers.

    In both traditional and emerging forms of the Church, the responsibility of pastoral care never disappears, because Christian people are always in need of the presence and touch of God, which can come very reassuringly through the ministry of another person who has been entrusted with this duty. The Liturgical Commission has prepared this volume with such clergy and others in mind. It has come from a request for a portable, durable and easy-reference volume containing the essentials for pastoral ministry ‘in the community’.

    Common Worship: A Pastoral Ministry Companion contains authorized and commended services, prayers and readings already published in other volumes of the Common Worship library, especially Pastoral Services and Christian Initiation. As with these previous volumes, the thrust of this new, portable volume is of the pilgrim being accompanied on the journey by the Church past and present, which surrounds us, supports us and prays for us, revealing the presence of Jesus Christ at all points of life.

    ¶    The Gathering

    The Greeting

    Peace to this house and to all who live in it.

    (or)

    The peace of the Lord be always with you.

    Prayer of Preparation

    All   Almighty God,

    to whom all hearts are open,

    all desires known,

    and from whom no secrets are hidden:

    cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

    by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

    that we may perfectly love you,

    and worthily magnify your holy name;

    through Christ our Lord.

    Amen.

    Prayers of Penitence

    [Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden,

    and I will give you rest.]

    God shows his love for us

    in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

    Let us then show our love for him

    by confessing our sins in penitence and faith.

    All   Almighty God, our heavenly Father,

    we have sinned against you

    and against our neighbour

    in thought and word and deed,

    through negligence, through weakness,

    through our own deliberate fault.

    We are truly sorry

    and repent of all our sins.

    For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

    who died for us,

    forgive us all that is past,

    and grant that we may serve you in newness of life

    to the glory of your name.

    Amen.

    The president says

    Almighty God,

    who forgives all who truly repent,

    have mercy upon you,

    pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

    confirm and strengthen you in all goodness,

    and keep you in life eternal;

    through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    All   Amen.

    The Collect

    The president introduces a period of silent prayer with the words ‘Let us pray’ or a more specific bidding.

    The Collect of the Day, or this Collect is used

    O God, forasmuch as without you

    we are not able to please you;

    mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit

    may in all things direct and rule our hearts;

    through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
