    When Lee collapsed on his back, the packed snow under him felt like concrete. Teary-eyed and panting, he choked on hot saliva and gazed up. The ice cliff towered over him, still imposing despite the streak of other twentysomething men who conquered it weekly. Lee had clung to some of their abandoned pitons during the more desperate parts of the climb. Reliance on those erased any sense of accomplishment, and that burned worse than his taxed muscles. Yet the ice would have thrown him to his death if not for the spike handholds. His numbed fingers and bones ached as though broken, as though a fall really happened. Having reached the ground safely once again, he eerily wished it had.

    Why...why did I do that?

    He gasped the words out at the winter sky. The wind tore away his foggy breath and left no answers. The afternoon sun rolled like a ball and gleamed off the slick bluff above. Lee’s hand rose by itself, although it felt impossible. What did that? What force lifted that clawed glove to his face? He saw not only the glove’s gray, specialized hooks, but also the stupidity of it all. He had scaled the whole cliff using only the gloves, his sweaty jogging clothes, and crampon-strapped boots.

    I don’t know why I did it, Lee said as he pulled off his climbing gloves and pocketed them.

    So I could record it, dumbass, came the voice of Jeremy.

    Jeremy, all 400 pounds of him, loomed into Lee’s view. The aspiring sumo wrestler blocked out most of the ice cliff. Lee swore his friend could
