Staying in the Green Zone - Christian Reichardt
SECTION ONE
Chapter 1: My Path
-The purpose of pain is to move us into action- Kenny Loggins
In years of hearing patients describe their unique struggles, there’s one thing I’ve always been able to say: I can relate! Because I’ve been there myself. I’ve encountered many of the same problems and looked for the same solutions. And truth be told, that’s exactly why I wrote this book — to share what ultimately worked for me, knowing that it can and will work for you, too. After hearing a little about my background, I’m sure you’ll see what I mean.
I was born and raised in Germany. By the age of five, I was battling various health issues. Fortunately, my parents were rooted in holistic care, and they sent me to a Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine whose treatments fundamentally altered my outlook. Having seen the benefits of Chiropractic care in my own life, I felt called to a life of compassionate healing and was encouraged by my doctor to go into the field.
Right after high school, I moved to Chicago to attend chiropractic college. By 24, I had graduated as a Doctor of Chiropractic and was giddy to be fulfilling my life’s calling and passion. Soon I was living in Malibu, California where life seemed more amazing with each passing day. Here, I started to serve some of the most incredible patients — professional athletes and movie stars, business moguls and sun-soaked surfers. Success seemed inevitable.
Within a few years, I had opened one of California’s first holistic health centers, and I began the practice of what is now called Complementary Medicine.
Shortly thereafter, I opened two more locations, which were only 15 miles away from each other. That’s how in-demand my services were!
I say all of this as prologue
to what happens next. Think about it: Here I was, at little more than 30 years-old, living a life that astounded my friends and family. Each morning, I’d wake with the California sun, drive my Ferrari down the Pacific Coast Highway while the blue ocean glistened outside the window. Life was like a dream. Or so it seemed.
Because on the inside, I knew something was amiss.
Sure enough, by the mid-1990s my life fell apart. Business, finance, personal relationships — it was all chaos. Yet in the midst of the storm, I had one saving grace, and that was my health. I had always taken good care of my body, so when things got really tough, at the very least I could say I had good health. During this time, I committed myself to a deeper yoga practice, ate well, and meditated with regularity. I also resumed playing golf, if only to spend more time outdoors. For its part, my work as a doctor felt quite satisfying. It fulfilled my deepest desire to contribute and gave me a sense of purpose and direction. With all of this in mind, I continued to practice and to flourish in the care I gave to my patients and to myself.
Despite the many beneficial practices I had implemented, the next few years brought new stresses that began to take their toll. There were irreconcilable differences with a business partner, a prolonged family fight over inheritance, and on and on. By 2013, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune thyroid disorder, something that shook me to the core and made me stop to take stock of my life.
For the first time, I realized that I really needed to switch gears. This wasn’t about adding a beneficial practice here or a soothing experience there. This was about truly, fundamentally altering my life. This was about making a SHIFT to get clarity not only about what I was missing in my thought process and thus to figure out what makes all of us tick.
From top to bottom, I began to review and re-evaluate the techniques, teachings, and things
I had practiced and previously embraced as remedies to pain and suffering. Meditation, spiritual disciplines, exercise, yoga, and so on. These were the tools for well-being being utilized by untold numbers of people worldwide for the past few millennia. So why hadn’t they worked for me? And more so, why hadn’t they worked for so many of my patients and friends
