About this ebook

Frances Harman has spent a lifetime living out of suitcases, a staunch supporter of her Papa as he builds an empire as a hotelier. A quiet soul, happiest when out of sight, left alone to pursue her own interests and happiness, she has never felt the lack of companions or excitement in her life. Yet, since his remarriage, she has been forced into a new world, one of parties and balls, afternoon promenades and has found herself overshadowed by her beautiful stepsister Maria in every way. But in a moment of uncharacteristic bravado she responds to a matrimonial advertisement in the newspaper, the life of a debutante is not for her, but why should she not search out a life that might suit her better?

Dr Marlon Carter has not been in Faith Creek long, and for a time rather thought himself in love with his partner's delightful bride, Susanna. But, his desire for his own wife and family has begun to play upon his mind. A town doctor should have a wife after all. But can he reconcile the actions and troubles of his past and allow himself to enjoy the love and affection that could be his for the taking?

    Chapter One

I shall not go, Maria said firmly, her cheeks flushed red and her tone defiant. Papa sighed.

You have no choice. You are not yet married and nor are you so much as affianced, so I am afraid that you must come with your mother and I. Frances understands. Why must you always be so difficult?

Because you married my Mama in order to get access to her fortune, Maria said spitefully and flounced out of the library without looking back. Frances had never seen her Papa look so irate, his eyes and the veins in his neck were both bulging, and his face was almost puce as he stared at the disappearing figure of his spoilt and wilful step-daughter.

Papa, Frances said, hoping desperately to diffuse this sudden eruption of anger between them. Maria is simply scared. She has lived here in Boston her entire life; she does not understand that the life of an hotelier often means that we must travel the length and breadth of the country from time to time. Give her time to adjust to this, I will speak with her. I am quite sure that she will come to see how exciting this will be.

She had better see sense soon, because this is too good an opportunity to miss. Gilbert Abernathy says that this little town could soon become a very big town and that a fortune could be made by whichever hotelier can build and open something suitable first. I intend to be that man, and I will not let that brat of a girl stand in our way. Why can she not see that without all those hotels she seems to take such pride in sneering at, that she simply would not enjoy the gowns and extravagances she takes for granted? She sees only that her Mama brought me Young’s here in Boston – thinks that is the source of all the wealth. Well, it is time she learned that money does not simply appear out of nowhere and that her jewels and trinkets are all hard earned.

Frances sighed and made her way out of the library. She rushed up the carved staircase and along the corridor to her stepsister’s rooms. Maria? she said softly as she knocked on the door. May I come in?

Oh go away, Maria said petulantly. You’ll only be on his side. Frances pushed the door open anyway and moved to the bedside where Maria lay prone, her expensive gown crushed beneath her. Frances perched on the edge of the bed and put a reassuring hand on her back.

Papa does not mean to be so gruff, she said. But, he must put the business first, or we cannot continue to enjoy all the luxuries and pleasures we are so blessed to possess.

But he will not listen, Maria wailed. She had never had anyone say no to her, had always been able to secure her own way in all things, until her Papa had sadly died from typhoid fever some six years ago. She had been quite disgruntled to learn of her Mama’s intention to remarry and had thrown a tantrum after tantrum hoping to change her mother’s mind. It had been the very first time in her life such behavior had not won her the spoils. She had not however learned to accept defeat gracefully, though she seemed to face it more often these days. Frances felt compassion for her, it was not Maria’s fault that her Mama and Papa had spoilt her so, but she was a grown woman now, and such behavior was barely tolerable in a young child.

Maria, it is not his place to listen. He is the head of the household, and as such may decide everything for any one of us here until we are wed.

I am as good as affianced to Gregor Fielding, Maria said stubbornly. And your horrible Papa wishes to whisk me away before the Season is over for some ridiculous hotel he has not even built yet. Heaven knows what kind of a hovel he will expect us all to live in until it is. Frances often found Maria’s dramatics to be exhausting, but she simply could not refute a word her stepsister had uttered. She had traveled all over the country with Papa, and whilst he was building his new hotels they had lived in some more than unsavory dwellings. There had been some lovely ones too, of
