Entry to Japan
Screen_Shot_2017-09-05_at_13.47.56.png1.1 Before Departure
1.1.1 Essential Preparation
Before coming to Japan from your home country, make sure the information you gathered are from trustworthy sources, in case of participating program provided by intermediate agencies/organisations, please check their accreditations and certifications and be aware of decisive information.
Please reserve enough time for following:
‣ Application and examination of the institution;
‣ Preparation for the documents for visa application & visa issuance;
‣ Looking for accommodation;
‣ Airline tickets reservation;
‣ Insurance purchasing;
‣ Packing for the travel.
Tips for clothes preparation:
¹
Generally, men smaller than 180 cm and women smaller than 170cm do not have to worry about cloth shopping in Japan. Clothes for men taller than 180 cm and women taller than 170cm are easy to get in big cities like Tokyo and Osaka as well, but difficult in small towns or village. In case staying in small cities/ towns in Japan for long time, we recommend to take an adequate amount cloth from home. In addition, please be aware of:
‣ Shoes
In general, Japanese feet are flat and wide, even shoes from foreign company like Adidas and Nike are also mainly made for typical Japanese feet. Sizes bigger than 25,5cm for women and 27cm for men could be difficult to find.
‣ Bra
Bras in large sizes can be found in lingerie shops in Japan mostly with expensive price and limited choices, thus better to bring enough of them for daily necessity.
Temperature:
²
Japan has four distinct seasons, however the winter here tend to be much milder compared to the U.S. and the most European countries; although the average temperature in summer in Tokyo seems to be cool, it could go up to 35 degree celsius or 95 Fahrenheit sometimes. Temperature in other areas are similar with relative small variation in the southern and northern part of Japan.
Currency:
Screen_Shot_2017-09-05_at_13.50.27.pngHaving some Japanese yen in cash prepared before departure is recommended for purchasing public transport ticket at the airport and other convenience purposes, the fee charged for currency exchange at airports are generally much higher.
Electricity: Voltage & Plug
Check the plugs of electronically devices several days before departure, plug adaptors and voltage convertors might be necessary when coming to Japan. Although plug convertors are also sold in electronics retailers and malls in Japan, it is recommended to take one of each as emergency back up.
Safety in Japan:
³
Japan as one of the safest country to live in, the crime rate is considerably low. Although it could be attributed to the declining population, there is no doubt that the Japanese society tops in terms of politeness, camaraderie and strict following of the rules.
Especially in crowded cities and places, a designated police box — ‘Kobans’ are easy to find and the polices are very friendly and willing to offer assistance when having any difficulties.
1.1.2 Visa Application
⁴
Temporary Visitors
For citizens of one of over 50 countries, with which Japan has a general visa exemption arrangement, a valid passport could grant entering Japan as ‘temporary visitor’ and a stay for up to 90 days. Otherwise, a valid visa has to be applied and attained before entering Japan.
Temporary visitors are not allowed to engage in any paid activities. However, short term studies at Japanese language schools are permitted.
* Be aware that all foreign tourists in Japan are required to carry their passports with them at all times.
Long-Term Visa
Foreigners live in Japan for a period of more than six months need a valid long-term visa.
After receiving the COE, application for a long-term visa should be done at the Japanese embassy in home country or country of residence. The documents required differentiate from area to area, check details on the official page of the embassy. This procedure takes a few days to several weeks depends on the country/area.
COE (Certificate of Eligibility)
A document issued by Regional Immigration Bureau of the Ministry of Justice in Japan for foreigner intends to enter Japan with a status of residence other than ‘Temporary Visitor’ .
It is recommended to obtain a COE before applying for the visa, possession of the COE will shorten the visa issuance process as well as the landing inspection at the airport.
Obtain a Long-Term visa without a COE is also possible. However, the process takes longer (several months) and needs more documents to be sent to Japan for verification.
The application for COE is commonly done by the Japanese institution (Universities, Language Schools, Companies, Organisations etc.) you are admitted to. The approximate time required for issuance is 10-12 weeks. This will make up for major portion of the visa processing time as a COE application has to be sent to the Regional Immigration Bureau of the Ministry of Justice in Japan and has to be sent back after approval. Make sure to provide all the necessary documents/details before initiating it, insufficient documentation can lead to considerable delays.
* For more detailed information concerning visa, please check the official page of Immigration Bureau of Japan: http://www.immi-moj.go.jp/english/tetuduki/kanri/visa.html

Screen_Shot_2017-09-05_at_13.51.16.pngHousing
‣ City center
Apartments in the city center of Tokyo are very expensive despite their tiny space, if you prefer to live close to city centers, guesthouse for foreigners might be an inexpensive option. Utilities such as gas, water and especially electricity are expensive.
‣ Suburbs
Rents are distinctly lower in suburb areas, surrounding prefectures and in other regions and cities of Japan, however, please keep in mind that additional commuting costs could be more than the saving on rent.
Daily Goods and Services
‣ Clothing
Clothing departments of supermarket chains such as Ito-Yokado or discount clothing stores such as Uniqlo offer inexpensive clothing, department stores and boutiques are more expensive.
‣ Grocery & Household
MaxValu, Daiei and Seiyu are well-known supermarkets in Japan for groceries and daily consumption. Besides those local supermarkets, 100 yen shops sell a wide range of products including stationery and kitchen goods at 108 yen ( including 8% consumption tax).
As another alternative, convenience stores sell things with higher price roughly, services such as an ATM, bill payment, post, printing,
