About this ebook

Written by Scribd Editors

John Wilmot, the Libertine, is a man of contradictory morals. He’s the Earl of Rochester, a poet, friend and confidant to Charles II, a notorious rake, an anti-monarchist Royalist, an atheist who converted to Christianity. When he falls in love with actress Elizabeth Barry, these beliefs are tested.

Charles II commissions Wilmot to write him a play, to which he happily agrees. But instead of using this opportunity to please Charles II, he writes a story that turns a critical eye to the crown.

Sexually indulgent, witty, and bawdy, The Libertine by Stephen Jeffreys is a critique on living life in excess. It was originally performed at the Royal Court Theatre in 1994 with its American premiere performed by the Chicago Steppenwolf Theatre Company. It has since received many major stage productions.

In 2004, The Libertine was adapted to a major motion picture starring John Malkovich and Johnny Depp. The major themes in this play are still relevant to today’s society, making it an instant classic.
