    Gertrude and Toby Meet the Wolf is an exciting adventure story for children who are transitioning from beginning readers to chapter books. This is the perfect book for the child who has been tasked with the usual 30-minutes-per-night reading homework. From the standpoint of reading progression, this title fills a specific niche that represents a gap in the children's book market--longer illustrated children's books that are more complex and challenging than typical picture books.

    Gertrude and Toby Meet the Wolf incorporates many traditional fairy-tale characters that will be immediately recognizable to many young readers. These characters include the Boy Who Cried Wolf, the Three Little Pigs, and of course, the Big Bad Wolf. The presence of these fairy-tale characters adds familiarity for young readers and keeps alive the old tales (e.g., those by the Brothers Grimm) that we have all come to know and love.

    The first and second books in the series, Gertrude and Toby's Friday Adventure and Gertrude and Toby Save the Gingerbread Man, follow the same approach, incorporating fairy-tale characters in contemporary settings. These are modern stories with more complex plots and wording than those of standard picture books, but without the daunting word count of typical beginning chapter books.

      This book is my daughter's favorite Gertrude and Toby. It's an easy read with an engaging story of these faithful friends. Getting themselves in and out of scrapes over and over in this remix of children stories.

      I won a copy of Gertrude and Toby Meets the Wolf by Sheri Tharp from Librarything.com. A so so I am not required to post a positive review just my honest opion about the book. I want to add that the illistrations are well designed for youth. This is the third book in the series but did not need to read the other two to understand the ideas of the story. This reminded me of The Froggy Books how my children loved them so much I believe Gertrude and Toby books should be in Early education classrooms prek and kindergarden reading story to teach friendship. I also think it is a wonderbook that will keep the younger audience attension with the amazing pictures. thank you for sharing your book Shari Tharp.

      I read this book to my little sister and we both really enjoyed it. I like the spin on some fairy tales and the illustrations are so cute and funny. This is the first of the adventure series I read and my sister has asked if we can get the rest, she's a big fan.

      Gertrude and Toby are off for another Friday Adventure! This time they are going fishing at Trout Lake. However, they are constantly being interrupted by a young boy shouting that a wolf is coming. Finally, the young boy is caught by the wolf. Gertrude and Toby decide to help the boy, but end up leading the wolf straight to his favorite meal, the three pigs!One more amusing adventure for Gertrude and Toby, this time combining the fairy tales of The Boy Who Cried Wolf and The Three Little Pigs. I loved that Gertrude and Toby continue to show that friends can have differences and that teamwork is best. This unlikely pair also shows ingenuity for the silly problems that they tend to get into. My little one loved the colorful but simple pictures of the comical animals.This book was received for free in return for an honest review.

      I enjoyed reading Gertrude and Toby Meet the Wolf to my granddaughter. It is a cute little story that incorporates characters from other children's tales into its storyline in a pretty neat way. I also enjoyed the illustrations by Jim Heath. They were cute and colorful.

      Granted I'm not the target audience not do I have a little one to read to but I still love picture books. This one is cute. Not fabulous, just cute. I was thinking the fairy-tale was the boy who cried wolf when the boy showed up but the three little pigs showed up too. I like Gertrude and Toby. Their friendship shows through but I'm not sure about the sneaking off part of the story. I like that Gertrude was willing to help someone he didn't know (the boy) then later was willing to give up something (the fish) to save everyone from the wolf.I would get it if I had a little one but I would hope that it wasn't one they wanted to have read to them over and over and over again.

      Fairy tale retellings have become very popular. Shari Tharp has created the Gertrude and Toby series which opens up this genre to young readers. In book three, Gertrude and Toby meet the boy who cried wolf and not surprisingly eventually encounter a wolf. This wolf soon ties the story in with the tale of the three little pigs. Jim Heath's howling wolf against the backdrop of a cloudy moon probably sets young readers' knees to knocking. This is the scariest of the books thus far, but even the original fairy tales were a little fearsome at times. The wolf who declares his fondness for pigs finds that he must settle for cooking up some "little boy stew" in his black cauldron. When the third little pig suggests an offering of turtle soup to satiate the wolf, "'I declare,' squeaks Toby, 'I'm a tortoise.'"The Gertrude and Toby series is a refreshing twist on the classics that should be enjoyed by young and old alike.

      I found this a charming book. The illustrations are well done and depict the action for the words on the page. Children who cannot read well yet will enjoy the pictures. I like the premise of Friday adventures. Even though it is the third in a series, I feel it could be read out of order. This adventure involves a contest of who can catch more fish at the local lake. Using worms or beetles on catails. Until the big bad wolf shows up. I think those who are familiar with the stories of "The boy who called wolf" and "The Three Little Pigs" will get more enjoyment from the story than those who aren't. Parts of the story may be scary to those of a certain age.I have not read this author before and would enjoy reading others.I received this book today as a free giveaway for an honest review.

      My kindergartner daughter enjoyed this book, and so did I. It's kind of fun to see what Fairy Tale characters Gertrude and Toby will meet each book. The pictures are good and the story is funny. I like seeing the similarities between the books in the series, and getting to know the characters better.

      The moment Farmer Sam leaves the farm to go shopping in town best friends Gertrude the goat and Toby the tortoise set off on their Friday adventure. Plans for a relaxing fishing trip to Trout Lake are forgotten when the friends see a young boy being carried off by a hungry wolf. They rescue their new friend and keep him from becoming the wolf's lunch but their adventure doesn't end there. Mr. Lobo is determined to get his lunch back and follows the friends to the red brick house of a very familiar trio. Will they outsmart the hungry wolf or become his next dinner?

      very cute addition to any child's book case. Not your natural child's book (ie disney books). the plot and characters are well written. Such a fun little adventure that the little ones will love to read over and over again. I also love the fact that I was sent a signed copy to make it that more memorable. And want to add the others (first 2) written by the author to the collection. while reading it felt as if we where part of the story. And not many books can do that anymore. Such a big plus and really won me over

      A very cute book that plays off traditional fairy tales. Story is about a goat and a tortoise who live together on a farm. They have Friday adventures, and this is one of them. They meet several characters along the way, some of whom you will be familiar. My grandchildren enjoyed it.

      This is the 3rd in the Gertrude and Toby Fairy-Tale Adventure Series. Every Friday, Gertrude the goat and Toby the tortoise head off on an adventure, when farmer Sam goes to market. In this story they decide to go fishing at Trout Lake. They have had a debate on the best bait to use (worms vs beetles) and decide that the one who catches the most fish will get to choose the adventure next Friday. On the way to the lake, they see a boy who cries wolf. When seeing him get dragged off by a wolf, they decide to help rescue him. Of course the three little pigs also make an appearance in this cute story.Once again, we meet fairytale characters in a different story and setting which is actually fun. It would be more entertaining for children, if they are familiar with the original fairytales so they can compare them. It is great to see Gertrude and Toby again. They will become the favourites of children who read this series. Their mannerisms and speech patterns are part of the humour in the stories. I also enjoy the illustrations in these books, they are large, colourful and fun to look at. I recommend this book to schools and classrooms (primary/junior) as well as to family libraries.I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I reviewed and loved each of the previous books in this series. Plot:Gertrude (the goat) and Toby (the tortoise) go fishing. Along the way, they see and hear a little boy running from a scary wolf - twice. However, they never actually see the wolf either time, After fishing for a bit, they do see the wolf (this is their third encounter with the boy) dragging the boy off to his cave to turn him into boy stew (a sad alternative to pork apparently). Gertrude and Toby rush off to save the boy. After escaping from the wolf, the three end up in the house of the three little pigs. The wolf, after assuming an adorable woodland disguise which fools no one, arrives at the pigs home demanding food, namely boy or pork. Everyone is terrified until Gertrude remembers that they have fish. The wolf is mollified for the day and the three pigs, the boy, and Gertrude/ Toby part friends. The story ends with our heroes lounging on a grassy bank at home on the farm dreaming of their next adventure.This is a charming story full of adventure and action. The only annoying part was the boy exclaiming in surprise, near the end that, "There really was a wolf! Who knew?" Wait, what? The boy has been pursued and tied up by the wolf and still he seemed surprised? It didn't really make sense. I understand that maybe at the beginning he is the "boy who cried wolf" when there was no wolf. But at the end, he is captured, almost turned into boy stew, and then really pursued by a wolf. It seems to me that the time for surprise has passed. Perhaps that sentence would have more literary impact if he said it earlier in the book? Maybe when he is tied up? Gertrude and Toby could look surprised and the reader is then in on the joke that this is the "boy who cried wolf".Illustrations:Since this is an early reviewers copy, the illustrations are not complete. However, I do have beautiful line drawings in my copy. They are incredibly expressive. I especially loved the fabulous wolf. He has such intense emotions and they are all conveyed by the artist. He is drawn scarily (his paw wrapped around the boys arm, his claws and teeth prominently displayed) but in a comical way (a scary wolf in homemade woodland clothes). I also love Gertrude and Toby. This is our third outing with these characters and the illustrator seems to be feeling very comfortable with them - even unto them showing angry irritation with each other. His portrayal of each is true to their character and really adds depth to their stories. I just cannot say enough good things about these pictures!Overall:I hope you love these books as much as I do! They are not perfect but they are full of fun and charm.

      This book was so cute I love reading children's books I missed the first two books but I didn't feel as though I was missing anything by not reading the other books the illustrations in this book were so adorable. I liked this book a lot .

      Shari Tharp weaves an adventure story together with a couple of references from famous fairy tales – The Boy Who Cried Wolf and Three Little Pigs. There is an odd couple of main characters who are best friends and live on a farm. There is Gertrude who is a goat and Toby who is a tortoise. This story is the third adventure in this series. Unlike other fairy tales, this one lacks a useful lesson or moral. However, as a teacher, I could see using this children’s book as a writing example and exercise. Since some students suffer writer’s block, students could follow this formula. Read some fairy tales and use one or two of the scenarios in their own writing.

      In this, book 3 of the Gertrude and Toby Fairy-Tale Adventure series, Gertrude and Toby choose to go fishing for their weekly adventure while Farmer Sam goes shopping. They meet many familiar faces from other tales, just as the young reader will recognize old acquaintances, such as the three little pigs, the boy who called "wolf" and of course, the big, bad wolf.The illustrations are beautifully expressive, demonstrating all the emotions of the gentle goat and tortoise as well as the ferocity of the wolf.
