The Secret Battle of Ideas about God - Jeff Myers

What people are saying about …

The Secret Battle of Ideas about God

"We’re in a battle for our hearts and minds. The Secret Battle of Ideas about God not only diagnoses the disease—it writes the prescription to cure it. As CEO of Summit Ministries, Dr. Jeff Myers has been in the trenches and foxholes of spiritual warfare. He doesn’t offer a sugar-coated salvation free from pain, problems, and pressure. Instead, he shows how a Christian worldview defeats the bad ideas that spread like viruses and multiply our misery. The Secret Battle of Ideas about God is hopeful, but it’s also deeply honest—and that’s what gives it such value. We’re all in the fight: The Secret Battle of Ideas about God is a combat manual for winning."

Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, regular contributor to Fox News, author, and speaker

"Jeff Myers’s brilliant and compelling The Secret Battle of Ideas about God is like a handbook on how to navigate life on earth. Ideas are what will help us or kill us. The good ideas, which happen to be true, help us live even when life is difficult; and the bad ideas, which are lies, kill us from the inside. I’m thrilled my friend has written this important primer on one of the most important subjects there is: what we believe and how that affects everything else. May God use this book!"

Eric Metaxas, author of Bonhoeffer and host of the nationally syndicated Eric Metaxas Show

"What good is it to complain about our ailments if we won’t seek the remedy? The Secret Battle of Ideas about God takes us inside the hidden battle that rages for our hearts and souls so we can see what attracts us to corrupt ideas and find the healing that comes from discovering the truth. Jeff and Summit have given us another worldview classic."

Del Tackett, DM, host of The Truth Project

Dr. Jeff Myers has devoted his life to studying worldview issues. He teaches students how to understand the differing perspectives that fill the culture around us. More importantly, he equips us to defend and communicate the Christian worldview in a way that articulates the truth in love. This book is sure to be a helpful resource.

Jim Daly, president of Focus on the Family

"There is no better authority on matters of worldview than Jeff Myers. He’s eminently qualified as a professor and the president of Summit Ministries, and he’s uniquely gifted as a man who has experienced the consequence of bad ideas. In The Secret Battle of Ideas about God, Dr. Myers shows readers how five deadly worldviews threaten to rob each of us of the love, healing, purpose, and peace found in Jesus. If you’re struggling to see God’s hand in your life, or if you’ve ever felt alone or abandoned as a Christ follower, this book is a God-send. The Secret Battle of Ideas about God will help you think clearly about your Christian walk and equip you to share the power of the Christian worldview with others."

    J. Warner Wallace, bestselling author of Cold-Case Christianity and God’s Crime Scene

Jeff Myers has led faithfully and thoughtfully for years in the arena of worldview and apologetics. This book is an accessible primer, targeted to equip a new generation to think through big issues. We need a resurgence of thought and action on applying the gospel to the questions around us. This book can help.

Russell Moore, PhD, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention

"Ideas matter. In fact, they matter a lot. Unfortunately, too many people—including Christians—are unaware of them and how they work. That’s why this book is so important. In The Secret Battle of Ideas about God, Jeff Myers unlocks how ideas are claiming our allegiance, both personally and culturally. It’s a captivating read, and so, so critical for all of us."

John Stonestreet, president of the Colson Center for Christian Worldview

"Jeff Myers has written some powerful and timely books. I would venture to say that The Secret Battle of Ideas about God is his best yet. He deconstructs five ‘fatal’ worldviews of today by exposing their logical inconsistencies, but more importantly, he shows that they fail to fulfill the deepest needs of the human heart. With insight and vulnerability, Myers shows both the uniqueness and the power of the Christian worldview. This book will be a game changer for those willing to read it with an open heart."

Sean McDowell, PhD, professor at Biola University, speaker, and bestselling author of A New Kind of Apologist

"The Secret Battle of Ideas about God is a gripping page-turner that reveals how bad ideas are infecting Christians today, undermining their influence in society, and squelching their boldness for Christ. The author, Dr. Jeff Myers, is president of Summit Ministries, the undisputed gold standard for teaching a biblical worldview. This is Summit at its best—fascinating insights delivered in a deeply personal way that inspires confidence to live differently, starting now."

Jim Garlow, PhD, senior pastor of Skyline Church, La Mesa, California

"With vivid stories and a vulnerable heart, Dr. Jeff Myers identifies the pervasive, misguided logic of our day and how to answer opposing worldviews that render us spiritually anemic. The Secret Battle of Ideas about God is exactly what any good doctor would prescribe for a culture that is riddled with confusion and noise about God and who he is."

Jack Hibbs, pastor of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills, CA

"Parents: if you want your kids to choose the truth and follow Christ, this is a must-read. Your children’s worldviews affect everything in their lives, and you play a vital role in forming it. In The Secret Battle of Ideas about God, Dr. Myers offers an unforgettable way to spot and defeat bad ideas that attack us like viruses. Using easy-to-understand language and vibrant illustrations, he shows you how to disciple your children toward a worldview based on Jesus so they can stay strong and not waver in a culture waiting to infect them with lies. Read this practical, important book!"

Kathy Koch, PhD, founder and president of Celebrate Kids, Inc.

"Dr. Jeff Myers and Summit Ministries have done it again! The Secret Battle of Ideas about God is a clear and succinct introduction to the devastating effects of bad idea viruses. Every church leader, member, and Christian school teacher needs the inoculation of biblical truth found in this intriguing work to stop the infectious indoctrination of impure ideas about God and biblical truth."

Wesley Scott, EdD, PhD, executive director of the Southern Baptist Association of Christian Schools

There’s a critically important battle of worldviews going on in our culture, yet many people don’t even realize they’re the casualties of bad ideas. Jeff concisely yet powerfully arms readers with an understanding of the battle lines, shows why only Jesus can win the war, and offers corresponding practical insights for daily living. His willingness to share his own struggles makes this an especially compelling read for anyone who wants to better understand the difference a person’s worldview makes.

Natasha Crain, author of Keeping Your Kids on God’s Side and Talking with Your Kids about God

"Ideas comprise the seeds that shape individuals and societies. Most followers of Christ would agree that the garden of our culture is being overtaken by deadly, destructive weeds. But why? How? Where do these vicious vines come from? What can we do in response? Within these impactful pages, Jeff Myers takes us under the soil of both our lives and culture to explore what he aptly refers to as The Secret Battle of Ideas about God. In ways that are both substantive and practical, he helps us understand how ideas shape our worldview and also how we can deliberately cultivate the right kind of thinking that will generate health in our individual lives and also in our culture."

Matt Heard, founder of THRIVE and author of Life with a Capital L

"The Secret Battle of Ideas about God shows how Jesus wins against the bad ideas that attack our nation like viruses. This is biblical worldview made very, very practical. A must-read to understand the call to truth and action."

Alveda C. King, evangelist and guardian of the King Family Legacy

Someone once said that if you embrace bad ideas, at some time in the future you will attend a banquet of consequences. That’s true of worldviews too. In this helpful book, Jeff Myers unpacks the personal implications of the ideas we embrace about God. It’s not just a survey of worldviews, but a personal, practical, ‘what difference does it really make’ worldview tour book. It will help you discover which ideas are toxic, and which ideas are life-giving and lead to freedom.

Don Sweeting, PhD, president of Colorado Christian University

"My long-admired friend of many years, Jeff Myers, has profoundly impacted my life and the lives of those I love most in this world. The Secret Battle of Ideas about God displays his signature ability to draw deep lessons from life’s stories and the metaphors that express truth all around us. The Secret Battle of Ideas about God reminds us that we’re in a conflict that requires both choices and action—and that we truly can have clarity and live differently to the glory of God."

Peter W. Teague, EdD, president of Lancaster Bible College

    Notes

    Foreword

It’s easy to see what people do, but harder to see what underlying ideas power their actions. Yet what we think and how we think matter. Whether or not we perceive it, at the core of ideas humans have about the world is a theological understanding of reality. This book helps peel back the layers so we can think theologically about the ideas that shape people’s lives, thereby enabling we who follow Jesus to respond to people and circumstances in more Christlike ways.

Looking deeper than mere actions—examining underlying patterns of thinking and worldview—has been a hallmark of Barna Group’s research for decades. In his book Think Like Jesus, my mentor George Barna defined a biblical worldview as a means of experiencing, interpreting, and responding to reality in light of biblical perspective. ¹ Following in George’s pioneering steps, our team at Barna has studied the relevance and role of the biblical worldview in Americans’ lives, and our tracking since 1995 shows continuity over the course of two decades—until recently. Data from the past five years suggest the 10 percent of US adults who have historically held a biblical worldview is on the decline; in 2015, just 6 percent of Americans qualified under George’s definition.

We expect the trend to continue because, during the past half decade, cultural changes have shifted into overdrive. As Gabe Lyons and I explore in our book Good Faith, nominally Judeo-Christian (biblical) cultural moorings have given way to a new moral code—the morality of self-fulfillment, characterized by perspectives like the following:

    The New Moral Code ²

Please indicate whether you agree or disagree with each of the following statements.

    % completely + somewhat agree

Source: Barna OmniPoll, August 2015, N=1,000.

As you can see, even practicing Christians accept these nonbiblical worldview statements in astonishing numbers—and questions of morality are not the only place nonbiblical worldviews are creeping in. The Barna team, commissioned by Summit Ministries, conducted new research among practicing Christians to assess the encroaching influence of the ideas examined in this book (for details, visit www.secretbattlebook.com/research). Strong agreement with ideas unique to these five non-Christian worldviews is widespread among practicing Christians:

61 percent agree with ideas rooted in new spirituality.

54 percent resonate with postmodernist views.

38 percent are sympathetic to the teachings of Islam.

36 percent accept ideas associated with Marxism.

29 percent believe ideas based on secularism.

These churchgoers certainly are not responding to reality in light of biblical perspective—and that’s a problem if our hope is to be a light for the world, pointing people loved by God to the way of Jesus. How can we point the way if we can’t even stay on the path?

That’s the first reason I’m so thrilled my friend Jeff Myers has written this book—because only good theology and clear thinking can cure bad theology and muddled thinking. In order to thrive as exiles in what I’ve come to call digital Babylon, we need a shot in the arm like The Secret Battle of Ideas about God to inoculate us against the worldview viruses that suffuse the
