    CHAPTER 1

    -Wet Dreams-

Moguru had little sleep the last few days since he entered the Kaichuu academy for new submariners, and now, he was seeing himself, just looking at the metal top of his bunk. It had been terribly hard for him to adapt to his new surroundings, for they were just plainly claustrophobic. He missed his mom badly, and there was nothing he could do about it. If he wanted to be inside a real submarine someday, he had to go along with it, and try to keep going.

Mogu…are you still awake? Someone spoke from the top bunk.

If I had been, I think you would’ve woken me up Tsure. The question is; why are you awake? Moguru looked up, as if he were speaking to Tsure right next to him; Tsure was on the top bunk.

Thinking of Damasu, I miss her. I can’t believe we need to be here two more days to get a home pass. I want to see her, now! He sounded anxious, almost as if in his mind he were looking at her naked.

Don’t push it Tsure, I mean, in the past submariners didn’t had home stays…ever, until graduation. Still, I’m afraid that if I return home, I might not want to return here.

You live in Gomitame Mogu, of course you will want to return here…no offence, but that’s the worse district in Minato. I believe, our shit water runs there as potable water. Wait…did I insult you with that?

Do you ever? I don’t mind, it’s just, that, I haven’t been feeling well lately.

Then, when we’ve our home stay go to the Oka district where I live, I bet dad won’t care.

    Really?

Yeah, anyways; why don’t you’ve a girlfriend again?

Not interested, my only dream right now it’s to get to the Lazurean…I want to see it for myself, and work in one of the new hyper-submarine models.

Really? Maybe you don’t have a girlfriend, because you’re so fat that you look like a manatee, and the girls run away in terror. Eeee, wait, did I insult you again?

    Hey, I’m not that fat.

But at sea you could pass as a baby whale.

Whatever, I’ve another reason for not thinking of girls…I want to find my father. I know he’s out there, in the Lazurean.

    What about the Kawari guy?

He’s my stepfather, he’s nice, but still; I want to know why my father left us.

Oh, so you’ve never seen him before?

You could say I haven’t, what I remember of him it’s too hazy, anyways; I’m getting sleepy. Good night Tsure. Moguru yawned as he finished speaking.

    You’re going to sleep?

    Yes, that’s what I said…

    Really?

Tsure… Moguru whispered as he felt his head become heavy, and so he fell asleep.

Slowly he fell asleep into a dream. It was night in his dream, and like always there was a soft blue glow in the night sphere, but to his surprise he couldn’t see any light whales on the outer sphere, all that could be seen was but a soft blue glow, and nothing more. In the dream, he was waiting with his mother at a harbor; he was waiting for his dad to return, like him, many kids were waiting for their fathers as well. What was weird was, that Moguru even if he was seventeen years old in real life, in his dreams he always looks like a five year old kid, not that it disturbed him, but it was so. On the ocean beyond, Moguru could see the soft circular glow that signaled an innermerge of a submarine into the harbor, in other words; a submarine in the Lazurean was to be transported to the waters of the circlobe’s ocean, by the use of a vibration transportation circle. Moguru was filled with excitement as the waters of the ocean lighted up in a circle of purple light, and then a few minutes later, a beautiful submarine emerged from the waters. The submarine slowly docked with the up most grace, the type of grace only dreams dare to’ve. All was filled with enthusiasm as its occupants disembarked with their beautiful white and blue uniforms; Moguru moved his eyes frantically, looking for his father among the many faces.

Is that you dad? He asked a tall man with a thick beard, just to be turned away, as if he were a stray dog.

Feeling so insignificant, and small, he saw all the faces from below, and then he realized that he can’t remember how his father looks, this came to him as a shock. In despair he looked at where his mother was, but she wasn’t there anymore. A sudden surge of fear overcame him, he felt so powerless. He sat on the floor crying, seeing as the other fathers walk away with their children in tow. In that moment he felt his tears burning hot like fire as all of this came to happen.

Mogu… He heard someone call to him.

    Mogu… The voice persisted.

Father? Moguru looked to the left, and in the left side of the dock he saw a man waving his hand at him.

Without thinking it twice Moguru stood up from the floor, and ran towards the man. He was so happy, and so sure that the man was his father, but when he was half way there he noticed that the man had no face, and in its place there was but a shadow. Moguru stayed really still, confused, and scared, as the man approached, and took him into his arms. Once in the man’s arms Moguru felt like flying, so light.

Mogu, wake up! The man yelled at the boy.

    Mogu, wake up now!

    Wake up!

Then, he fell into place that all of it was but a dream, and that someone really was calling to him in reality. He heard the shattering of many voices. He opened his eyes just to see as he was being swayed overboard by four recruits.

Just on the last second of being swayed, he noticed Tsure in one corner, covering his face with one hand; it was him that had been calling. Freefall towards the water, and then splash, a million bubbles passed his body as he went in, and then he was so shocked by the coldness of the water that he swam to the surface in no time. With the sound of his ears being free of the salty water he heard the wind and the waves as he surfaced, the wind was cold, and ever present in his wet, dripping hair. He took a deep gulp of air, and then stabilized himself to seek the submarine. First, he looked to one side, and nothing, but then he twisted to the other, and he saw the submarine a few meters away.

Moguru, for sleeping late you’ll have to help with lunch today! His submersion teacher yelled at him from the rail on top of the submarine, he was surrounded by some of the recruits, which; attentively looked at Moguru swim towards the submarine.

Of course, the submarine was stationary at the moment, the first classes in the morning consisted of breathing techniques to hold on to your breath slightly longer, and this was something essential for someone living in a submarine. If a problem occurred, one had to be ready no matter what.

Swimming with wide hand strokes, Moguru arrived at the right side of the submarine, placed his feet against the cold metal of a climbing stair that was built upon the very body of the vessel, and then pulled his weight upward with both hands; making thin streams of sparkling salt water run away from his wet body and back into the ocean. Moguru had short black hair, cut shorter on the lower sides; and at the moment he was wearing white boxers and a very thin no sleeve white under-shirt. As he climbed, he felt the water dripping away from his hair in huge drops. When he reached the top that was about ten meters up, he felt a warm hand touching his shoulders, looking at his side he noticed that it was Tsure.

Mogu, I tried to wake you up, anyways; I saved you some breakfast, you can eat it after you get dressed…by the way; nice boxers. Tsure smiled devilishly at his friend.

Let me guess, a corn dog…

    "Yeah, how did you know?

Well, you don’t notice anything on the mess hall, except for the damn dogs.

Moguru walked pass the teacher that was looking at him as if waiting for him to say something, and then, he climbed down the main hatch, Tsure followed with something rolled in tin foil held tightly in his hands. For a moment he turned his head, and looked at Tsure, and at the tin foil. He realized that he almost lost a meal, and at sea that was a really bad mistake; one looses precious energy while at sea. Tsure began to say something, but since they were walking towards the core room, the very noise of it all made his voice sound like a little bee.

I fucked…you…right! That’s all Moguru understood, and so he didn’t said a word until they came out on the other side near the crew’s quarters.

    Say I again…

That I fucked up the exam, you were right.

    Oh.

It was oxygen recycling machine, and not, oxygen tank; I should’ve listened to you.

Anyways, is the teacher mad at me?

Well, you got lunch duty with the old man.

    Cooking isn’t that bad.

He entered his quarters, and took a set of clean underwear, and a white sailor uniform with blue undertones.

The color of the uniforms very much tells the ranks…the darker the color, the highest the rank. At the moment, Moguru is in the Otamajakuchi rank, or in other words, Tadpole, the lowest rank there’s after civilian. To enter the Otamajakuchi rank is relatively easy, one has to be able to swim, and be at least fifteen years old.

Are you sure Mogu? If you spend too much time in the kitchens they’ll classify you to Ryoorishi rank, and you’ll be a cook all of your sea life.

It’s needed to be a Ryoorishi rank submariner for at least a year to classify as captain, so that won’t be so bad. Moguru took his shirt and boxers off, and then dried himself with a towel.

God, cover up, I’m going to go blind. Tsure turned away as his friend began dressing up.

Moguru’s skin was very pale, with no scars or hair in the chest or legs. Moguru changed quickly into the dry clothes. Since that day all the classes would be given as lectures, he wasn’t afraid of getting his uniform wet once again. While seated on the border of his bunk he poked Tsure on the back with his finger, so to make him turn.

Here. Tsure offered him the tin foiled food he had managed to take out from the mess hall.

Thanks, so what did I miss today? He unfolded the tin foil, and found two corn dogs, and a granola bar inside.

What, apart from your total humiliation? Man; that was funny. Tsure teased while grinning.

Moguru looked at him with his eyes half closed, and then looked back at the corn dog. He poked it with one finger, and then took a bite out of it, it was kind of tender where it was supposed to be crunchy, but he didn’t care, and so he took another bite.

    Well, Kabi took a bath.

So the world is coming to an end, and how he looked?

Well, paler than you. He grew up in Gomitame like you did. Haven’t you spoken to him?

    I used to know…*munch*…him.

Used to? What do you mean?

Well he doesn’t seem to remember me; maybe he wants to forget Gomitame.

Eeee, it is so bad there?

I’ve lived there all of my life, how should I know? Anyways, we better get going, I got to take sonar basics 1. Where’re you going?

The Sail, I was invited to look. Didn’t I tell you?

No, anyways, tonight tell me all you see ok?

Yeah, yeah, but we’ve to fall asleep earlier, or once again you’ll get a cool morning bath, like the one from today…so how did it felt?

    Tonight, I’m late.

Since the compartment wasn’t very spacious, after sticking the granola bar in his mouth Moguru pushed his weight against Tsure, made him loose all of his air, and all in order to actually reach the hatch door, soon after; Tsure punched him on the tummy.

You could’ve told me to move, eeee, I was stomped by a mountain bear.

The male Kaichuu academy consists of three gigantic submarines, all stationary in the ocean near the nautical metropolis of Minato in circlobe Yamato. The design of these academic submarines are archaic compared to the Lazurean faring models that have been developed in the resent years, but, still they’re pieces to marble about. I say archaic because they don’t have conditioned air, pools, or let’s say, the type of volatile equipment used on a Hyper-submarine of the latest design. A type of code is needed to enter Yamato from the Lazurean, and if a submarine doesn’t have such code imprinted to the sound of the engine, it must be destroyed at once by the global protection systems just outside of Yamato.

Since he arrived, Moguru heard that at probability levels it’s possible to attack Yamato by the use of aero versatile submergible submarines, or as they’re described in text books, the A.V.S.S. Some of the submariner trainees have developed a video game program to test this, but Moguru haven’t come around to test it. The Kaichuu submarines don’t have many weapons, because at the moment none of the known circlobes are at war with one another. The Luquaz trinity area has been in negotiations with Yamato, but things are going smoothly according to the news.

After reaching the 3rd floor down, Moguru turned left, and then followed the long line of class rooms towards the one in the end, he opened the door, and sat down in silence as a group of students began to chatter away. In the second chair to the left Moguru could see Kabi, the poor guy already has a smudge of oil in his face. For a second Kabi looked at him, it was almost as if he had recognized someone in his face, but then he turned his head back down to face a little mechanical devise he had been fixing. Moguru looked at him work with both hands, and mouth, in each of them a screw driver, or a metal pike to pull little objects out of the device.

In the sea there’s always a bigger fish, and at that moment Moguru saw his, bigger fish; he was called Katamari, a name that actually means lump. On his first day Moguru had tried to be friends with Katamari, but ended up in the floor with a nose bleed. Tsure was there too, and that’s how they met, brothers by nose bleed. Well, the thing was, that Moguru is half the size of Katamari, and what Mogu has in fat, Katamari overpowers in muscle. Katamari always has his big gut sticking out of his shirt, and his long thick side burns complementing his chunky face.

Good morning wet pants, saw your little plunk this morning.

You seem to be enjoying yourself, why didn’t you join me?

Katamari said nothing, he just looked at Moguru a little puzzled, and then sat down three chairs away; Mogu took it like a man, and then glanced at Katamari. Moguru wasn’t very sure why Katamari had punched him the first day, all was so confusing, but it did happen. At that moment the teacher entered the room, and so making the whole class became as quiet as a funeral. The sonar basics teacher is a forty something, which by his experience should be captain by now, but couldn’t by unreleased reasons. He uses his dark brown hair to the sides, and his name is Hebi. The name suits him perfectly, but not many know that it means snake.

Good morning everyone, I got the results of your resonance tests, and I’m inclined to say that I’m surprised by some, and disappointed by others, but still, a good submarine needs different types of crew members, so all will succeed, and fail in different areas. I’ll pass the numbers by your desk monitors, and if your name has the Kaichuu logo at the left side you’ll have to meet me at my front desk afterwards. The teacher pressed a button in his deck and the grades began to be transmitted across the monitors, strategically placed on top of the student’s desks.

Moguru grabbed the edge of his monitor with both hands, and began to read his report…

    Moguru Musashisei Watanabi…Loading

The message loaded, and then began a countdown from ten to zero.

The sonar resonance text taken by the submariner, Moguru Musashisei Watanabi, rank… Otamajakuchi, age 17, was reviewed, and inspected by the Kaichuu naval academy, and the rank numbers are, 3 out of 10 in normal resonance levels.

Soon after followed the Kaichuu logo; a sphere, and an ocean. He had to stay after class, and speak to the teacher as he was told earlier, so he stayed silent, paying attention to rest of the class.

What’s there to speak about? I didn’t even rank as a minor sonar resonance listener. I wanted to pilot an A.V.S.S, now I’m under qualified to enter as a Sango rank student. Maybe I’ll stay as a Ryoorishi …I hate it when Tsure gets me like this.

With both hands he tapped his head slightly, and then rested it on the desk, as bummed as possible. The teacher was watching from under his eyes, he was watching him, and Katamari, that unexpectedly was reacting in a very look alike way. After everyone reacted to the scores, the teacher cleared the screens, and followed to give an hour long class about sonar history, the advances that there have been in the last hundred years, and how little it changed in its use.

Well, and that’s why we can’t use a very potent radio when in the Lazurean or underwater on this very ocean, Radio waves can be intercepted, and so making them a easy way to pinpoint the location of an enemy submarine, or one of our own…but that’s part of our next class.

The shift bell rang loudly, making the whole class mobilize itself towards the exit, only Moguru, and Katamari stayed. Accusingly, Katamari looked at Moguru, and then stood up with a loud thud and walked towards the teacher, but as he was halfway across the class room…

You can stay in your desk Katamari. He turned back, and sat next to Moguru with a frown on his chunky face.

I called you two today, because both of you turned out to be the worse grades in the whole class, you two can’t in any way detect other submarines.

So… we suck, yeah we know that.

Let me finish Katamari, your grade in the resonance level is -1, which is almost zero in the negative resonance scale, which means; that you can hear objects that aren’t moving, but that can resonate, and make sounds too low for anyone to pick up in a normal sonar.

    Is that good, or bad?

A normal type of sound can be picked up in 1 to 9, but you can pick up sounds that are too low in the scale, and that’s something I haven’t seen before, the things you can pick up are things that normally the sonar wouldn’t show, for lack of acoustics, which brings me to Moguru. Your resonance level is +9, and that’s a resonance level that’s off the charts…in theory, you can pick up the acoustics of things moving too fast for the sonar to pick up. What I mean is; movement in a molecular level. In the Lazurean there’re objects like these, objects in a very low frequency, and others in a pitch too high. You two are the complete opposites in your field.

They both looked at each other feeling special, as if by committing an error they’d done something unexpected, and new. The truth was that the teacher was interested; because he had never seen someone do something like that. There’re always things sonar systems can’t pick up for several reasons, and others that are too fast to be traced, in these two students he might find something interesting.

I’m supposed to cancel your earned points in this class, but I believe there’s more to be expected of you two, so, I’ll send this matter to a friend, and see what I can do. For now, take the accessing papers for the next semester’s classes as if you two had passed this class, understood?

Yes sir! They both found themselves saying it at the same time, and that surprised them.

Well, you two are dismissed for this semester, and hope you two enjoy the home stay. At this Katamari answered with a deeper frown, as if something were disturbing him.

Katamari went out of the room first, and then Moguru followed, he had to go to the Kitchen area to help cook lunch.

    CHAPTER 2

    -Potato Peels Ala Marinade –

Boy, close the damn door; I don’t want the whole submarine sniffing for food that isn’t ready. A stocky old man with a half meant beard yelled at Moguru, which had just entered the kitchen.

Ok… Moguru spoke, while staring at a pile of books that were in a chair next to the door.

Don’t ok me, you say sir, I’m old enough to be your daddy-o two times. You hear me!

    Yes sir…

That’s better The man remarked in a very low voice, and then looked as Moguru closed the hatch. Boy, what’s your business here?

Mmm, I overslept, and I… The old man interrupted him.

I didn’t ask you to tell me an old wives tale, go to the point.

Sir, I’m here to help with the cooking.

That’s better, what’s your name? The old man was doing circus tricks with some fried potatoes as he questioned.

    Moguru Musashisei Watanabi.

Mo will do, mine is Tabe, and so, what do you think you know how to cook?

I know how to make potato peels ala marinade, scrapped rice, pineapple peel juice, and fish bone soup. Well, Things on that manner.

You grew up in a poor district?

Yes sir, but I’m proud of being born there, I believe someday it’ll get better.

That’s good, the academy’s ideology haven’t gotten into you yet. You were born in Abura?

No, but my mother told me my dad was born there…in the old submarine graveyard. At the moment I live in Gomitame, but I’m planning to visit Abura on this home stay.

Abura is a pretty ruthless district, are you going with someone?

Not really, I’m planning to see the graveyard, and hopefully; the place my dad grew up.

Is that so? Come here, and help me peel some potatoes.

After that, the old man didn’t said much, but still was happy to see that Moguru had some cooking skills. Moguru took all the potato peels, and after carefully cleaning them out of dirt he enclosed them on a sealed container.

Mo, why do you save them? The old man asked, looking at the peels taking precious space in his refrigerator.

If well seasoned, and fried they can make a good side dish, if prepared food is running short. You can do them if you want to save time tomorrow. If well fried they taste like chips.

Is that so? Come here, and help me mash the potatoes.

Moguru took a potato tray, and placed it in a rectangular metal base used for that purpose, and with a double sized masher he began to mash the potatoes with all his energy, all while Tabe prepared a type of sauce. From the corner of his eyes Moguru looked as the old man mixed pepper, chili peppers, and some small red seeds to make a type of spice paste. Then he sliced tomatoes, and lets them boil along with the paste. In a matter of seconds the whole room smelled spicy.

Someone opened the door at the same exact time when Moguru was half way smashing the boiled potatoes. The one standing there was a strong-bulky guy with black hair, he was tall, with a beard, and he seems to be looking for something.

Tabe, have you seen my books around here. He looked around, and seemed to be missing that the books were in a chair next to him.

You imbecile, you plan on being the best in the Ryoorishi rank? Go shave that dreaded beard before I do it myself with a numb knife.

But, you’ve one too old man…

    So what? That’s just me.

Hi, the books are there. Moguru pointed at the chair, and the tall guy jumped as if startled, but Mogu could tell he was just joking.

Thanks bro… He spoke towards Moguru, and then towards the old man. It’s good to see you too, dad.

The tall guy closed the hatch, and then Moguru moved his stare towards the chief Ryoorishi for a few seconds, before returning to the potatoes. The old man said nothing, and then began to stir the spicy tomato sauce with a spoon, and added strips of bacon to the concoction. By that moment, Moguru had learned that it was a type of gravy for the potatoes. The man tasted the gravy with a taster, and then frowned.

Almost can bring a man back from the dead…good, but an almost orgasmic experience is what I’m looking for out of this, now all it needs is sugar to finish up the flavor.

With one hand he bent his arm sideways, and without looking, he took a container from a container holder filled with spices, and cooking ingredients. His eyes never moved from the sauce, and then he added two full spoons of sugar to the mix. He tasted it again after a while, and then smiled. Moguru was engaged in a rhythm smash dance with the potatoes, he was almost finished when suddenly the old man began to speak.

That’s my son, my junior...what he lacks in style, and order he gets in cooking skill. Want to know what he wanted to be before actually setting a foot in this academy?

    What sir?

Mo, of all things he wanted to be a captain, have they told you yet how long it takes for an Otamajakuchi to reach captain?

No sir. Moguru looked at the old man.

It takes almost five years of hard work in one of the hyper-submarines, testing all the other ranks, and becoming a master in them all, in order to’ve enough points to be a captain. My son had that dream when he was about your age, but he became fond of food, like his father here. Slowly the kitchen becomes your home, and you start to move in synchronization with the waters.
