Instant Pot – The New Stove

Remember those funny late night infomercials that promoted kitchen gadgets that were so useful you could basically throw away every other appliance in your kitchen? I know, I used to find them ridiculous too. Well, not to sound like a late night infomercial pitchman, but the Instant Pot is just that: multi-purpose kitchen appliance that replaces seven kitchen gadgets. This seven-in-one super multi-cooker can work as:

    -  An electric pressure cooker

    -  A stove top and sauté pan

    -  A slow cooker

    -  A rice cooker

    -  A yogurt maker

    -  A steamer

    -  A warming pot

I don’t know how big your kitchen is, but I sure know that I don’t have the space to find a spot for every one of these appliances in mine. So, having one that does the work for seven different tools is quite impressive.

Since you are reading this book, my guess is you already own (or are thinking about buying) one. And even if you purchased this super-useful book solely for its recipes and already know how to use an Instant Pot, I ask you to bear with me on this one. After all, you may have skipped something important while reading, okay, skimming through the long instruction manual. I promise to make things less boring.

    Cooking with an Instant Pot

    THE BUTTONS

Like I said, the Instant Pot is multi-functional, but it is actually its functionality that makes people feel overwhelmed or intimidated to use one. Yes, there are quite a few buttons, but once you learn how to properly use them, they can save minutes, if not hours, of your time spent in the kitchen.

Manual Button – This is probably the most used button. This is the button you should use for setting your pressure cooking time.

‘+’ and ‘-’ Buttons - You can increase or decrease the cooking time with these two buttons.

Adjust Button – This button adjusts the setting. Your Instant Pot comes with default settings; if you want to change the default settings just click this button to go from more to less settings.

Pressure Button – By pressing this button you switch from low- to high-pressure cooking and the other way around.

Timer Button – This button can delay cooking for up to 24 hours.

Sauté Button – Choosing this button will allow you to sauté or brown your food inside the Instant Pot with the lid open.

    -  The default setting for sautéing is set to 320 – 349 degrees F (160 – 176 degrees C), which is the best temperature for regular sautéing.

    -  If you choose the ‘-’ or less setting, you can change the temperature to 275 – 302 degrees F (135 – 150 degrees C), which is preferred for when you are simmering or thickening sauces.

    -  If you choose the ‘+’ or more setting, you can increase the temperature to 347 – 410 degrees F (175 to 210 degrees C), which is great for browning or stir-frying the food.

Keep Warm/Cancel – By pressing this button you can either choose to cancel the operation and turn off your Instant Pot, or you can start its amazing Warm Up function that can keep your meals warm for up to 10 hours.

For those of you who own an Instant Pot Smart, you can also choose the ‘Adjust’ function to change the temperature:

    -  The default setting is set to keep the meals at 145 degrees F, or 63 degrees C.

    -  If you press the button once, you can choose the More Setting option. That will keep your meals warm at 167 degrees F or 75 degrees C.

    -  By pressing the button twice, the Instant Pot will keep the warm temperature at 133 degrees F or 56 degrees C.

Slow Cook Button – To use your Instant Pot as a slow cooker, simply press the ‘Slow Cook’ button. The default setting is set to 4-hour slow cooking, but you can change the time by pressing the ‘+’ or ‘-’ buttons.

By pressing ‘adjust’ you can change the temperature to:

    -  Normal setting 194 – 205 degrees F (90 – 96 degrees C)

    -  High
