What is Filmmaking
The art of filmmaking is the most influential form of art that has ever existed throughout the history of human artistic endeavors. The purpose of art is not merely to express human emotions, but to tap into the psyche of the viewer and implant an idea that can potentially alter the course of human progress. Any art that does that or at least attempts to do that, is as significant to the advancement of human species, as modern medicine. In fact, art is the medicine for the soul.
The most influential among all forms of art is filmmaking. In the hands of a true filmmaker, it is not merely a film that is made, rather it is a beautiful concert of pictures, that reflects the deepest truths of the human society, which the society either chooses to ignore or deems unimportant. A film may be simply a symposium of moving pictures, but it is the most effective symposium you can ever have in shaping the psyche of the human society. You can tell a lot about the intellectual and moral progress of a nation’s citizens, by the quality and nature of the films they watch.
Filmmaking has the power to move mountains. Filmmaking has the power to fortify the feeble, unify the divided, raise the abandoned and inspire the ignorant. A movie is not a movie, it is a potential nuclear furnace of inspiration, courage and conscience. A true, conscientious and visionary filmmaker has the capacity to inspire a change at a deeper level of the social psyche.
The human mind is highly susceptible to external information. In fact, these external packs of information contribute a great deal in shaping the character of an individual, and therefore the character of a society. Now imagine, what will happen when some of that information are carefully crafted by an individual and then fed to the minds of the society, such as through a film! If the craftwork turns out to be a good one, it can open new gateways of perception in the closed minds of the society. Now that’s called Cinema.
A true film is not the one that wreaks havoc in theatres right after its release, but the one that fosters the capacity to ignite a human mind decades or even centuries after its release. Most films get drowned into the abyss of the ocean of time. It is only a real film that can make time its slave. And this is true not only for films, but for every single feat of human excellence. Feats that make an impact on the human psyche beyond the momentary rush of emotions, become immortal throughout history. Because they do not just represent the endeavors of a few individuals, rather they serve as the beacon of excellence for the entire human species.

Anything that makes you a better person, is a religion. Because religion is not the process of worshipping an imaginary being up in the sky, rather it is the process of internal growth. Real religion enables an individual to break free from the primitive norms of the society and grow into a real wise being – a true sapiens. And a film can do that quite well.
Now, if we perceive filmmaking as a religion, it would require a fundamental principle. And in the society of thinking humanity the fundamental principle of filmmaking should be – entertain, but also give the viewer something to think about. That my friend, is the true essence filmmaking. Films that are made on the grounds of nothing but petty entertainment are no more valuable in terms of art, than hardcore pornography.
If you do something simply to earn a living, you may earn a lot of money but you'd be miserable your whole
