People have been sewing nearly since the beginning of time. Sewing was considered a survival skill, the ability to fashion a garment by hand to protect the body and keep it warm and dry. Later the job of sewing was mainly passed down to women, generation by generation, and in schools all girls were expected to take home economics courses in which they were taught basic household skills such as cooking, sewing and homemaking.

However, with the explosion of clothing manufacturing and advertising boons touting the advantages of machine made fashionable clothing, the skill of sewing has slowly fallen to the wayside. A 2012 article in Forbes Magazine, "The Redomestication of the American Woman, states that there are very few women in the United States today that know how to operate a sewing machine, or even sew on a button.

Now, though, with the popularization of DIY/DYO (Do It Yourself/Do Your Own) television shows and magazines, there is a resurgence of interest in sewing – and designing – one’s own
