The book is clean. That’s about all the positive I can say. It reads like a kid wrote it.

Cody's Mail Order Bride - Cia Leah

Chapter One

Liza Crammer sat down at her great, great grandmother’s desk in the study and started sifting through the mounds of papers inside the drawers.  The old house creaked and groaned with the wind that was howling outside, making her shiver.  Why her father had kept this place all these years was beyond her, yet she knew he didn’t have the heart to sell it.  Now that he passed, it was up to her whether to keep it or list it for sale.  She wondered who’d buy a house that didn’t have electric or running water.  She would probably be stuck with it or have to update it, which probably would cost her a fortune to do so and she didn’t have that kind of money.  She barely made ends meet now.

She sighed and pulled out a bundle of letters tied with a faded pink ribbon.  What in the world is this?  She untied the ribbon and took the first letter and opened it.

As she read, she remembered her father telling stories of how his great grandmother ran a mail order bride business.  Most people didn’t believe him and she often wondered if he were just telling tales, but after going through several letters, she realized he had been telling the truth.

She sorted through the letters, happy that most of the women wrote her great, great grandma and thanked her for making a wise choice in husbands for them.  Four of them weren’t happy.  That was sad, but she supposed not every one of them could have things turn out perfectly.

When she reached the last letter on the bottom of the pile, she opened the letter and read it, wondering who the man was that insisted that he be sent a mail order bride posthaste.  There were several letters stuffed inside the envelope and her great, great grandmother had written notes on one of the letters stating no decent woman would marry the stubborn, arrogant Cody Hawke, who thought women should be at his beck and call.

Tucked inside the last letter was a photograph of the man and her breath hitched in her throat at the sexy looking cowboy.  Looks more like a gunslinger, she whispered.  He made quite an impression of confidence in the way he stood with his feet spread wide, his hands resting easily on the guns strapped around his waist.  His hair was shoulder length and black as a midnight sky, and his eyes stared straight ahead.  He was any woman’s dream come true and his stance and looks portrayed he was a man to be reckoned with and could handle any situation that arose in the untamed old west.

He makes the men of today look needy, she said.  She’d never seen a man as sexy as he was and wished she were the bride he sought back then.  Goodness, all her great, great grandmother had to do was show the women his picture and they would have fought over him.  She tucked the picture into the front of her bra and sighed.  That’s about as close as I’ll ever get to man like you.

She opened the envelope wide to stuff the letters back inside when a gold and ruby pin fell out onto the desk.  Wow, this must be worth a fortune!  She picked it up and felt it prick her finger.  Ouch!  She sucked on her finger where the pin stuck her and picked the pin up carefully with her other hand when the room began to spin around.

Im not bleeding enough to faint from blood loss, she cried, trying to stand up, but the motion of the room made her dizzy and nauseous.  She fell to the floor before everything went black.

Cody Hawke heard his horse whinnying outside.  He always left him loose because he was better at guarding the ranch than his dog, Ginger.  He slid the skillet of bacon and beans to the back of the stove and went outside.  Dusk had just begun to fall and a few fat flakes of snow fell from the sky.  What’s going on, Spirit?  He asked, when he saw the horse standing over something lying on the ground in front of him.  He ran over to see a woman lying there.  What the heck!  He bent down and tuned her onto her back.  Miss, you all right?  Miss?  He quickly checked her over and didn’t find anything broken, no bumps on the head or anything.  He glanced around but there wasn’t a horse or buggy in sight.

Spirit, I wish you could talk and tell me what just happened and how she got here.  He started to pick her up when he saw the pin lying beside her hand.  He picked it up.  This is the pin that I sent that mail-order bride company.  This must be the woman they sent.  He scooped her up into his arms and strode to the house and laid her down on the couch.  "Miss,
