I Don't Like My Life - Mike McClure Jr.

    notes

    introduction

Alright, so let me explain something right away. My choice in naming this book.

There are people who saw the title and thought, Well, this is just the book I need because I certainly don’t like my life right now.

But then after looking a little closer, they weren’t so sure.

"Huh? How can I love my life and I don’t even like it? And what exactly do these two glasses have to do with anything?"

If I just described your reaction, obviously you’re intrigued or I wouldn’t still have your attention. Go with that feeling and keep reading. You’ll find out how soon enough, and when you do, I promise, the newfound understanding that you have about the power you have over your reality is going to give you life.

There are others reading who knew right away what I meant. You thought of plenty of people stuff you don’t like, but you love.

Kudos for catching on. You hang in there for a second while I clarify for everyone else.

I’m a pastor, and a large percentage of my audience are fellow believers. If, like me, you’ve been saved a little while, you know what it is to have joy in spite of.

Everything around you can be going wrong and still, because you know that God is in control, you don’t sweat it. You don’t fret. You don’t get anxious. You don’t lose your hair or go get some more because you’re facing a crisis.

To the average person, the fact that you’re still standing is inconceivable. Incomprehensible, even. But you know that although the struggle is real, so is His grace, so you don’t trip or resort to the if-all-else-fails-fake-it-till-you-make-it response.

You have a genuine, abiding sense of gratitude for the trials and adversity you face, because you know these make you a partner with Christ. Regardless of what life looks like in the present, in the near or distant future, you come out on top. You may be sinking right now, maybe even drowning, but you know that because of His grace, in the end, you’ll float or fight your way to the top.

Cue the Don’t Wait till the Battle is Over, Shout Now anthem, because this one song could be the soundtrack for your life.

When Jesus is your partner, it doesn’t matter if the name of the game is Depression, Anxiety, Wayward Child, Selfish Husband, Impossible Wife, Lost Job, or Broken Heart. You might go through some tough stuff, but in the end, you always win.

No one sane wants to suffer, but oddly enough, you find meaning in suffering. It can be a pretty peaceful place when you know that in being His partner, you come to know Him in new ways; ways that strengthen your resolve and that intensify the intimacy of your relationship with Him.

And as far as intimacy with Christ is concerned, you’re completely here for it. You know that intimacy with Christ is an unrivaled feeling; no human connection could ever compare.

If you can’t identify with this feeling of profound fellowship, my prayer is that you work to draw closer to Him so that you can experience it. It will change everything you think you know about what true love and real relationship is.

Now, even if you can identify with what I’ve just described, you keep reading too, because chances are, if we’re honest, even those of us who are rooted in and driven by our faith have seasons where we don’t like our lives.

The goal of this book, then, is to teach you how to reduce the rate and duration of the stages where you dislike your life, by creating routines of regular self-examination and cultivating a strong sense of self-awareness, so that you never unwittingly or unconsciously drift off your desired course due to distractions.

Whew! That was a long sentence, but every word there matters. Go ahead. Reread it if you need to. I’ll wait. (You can thank my editor for that lengthy declarative by the way).

Got it now? Good. Let’s move on, because therein lies the premise of this book and the reason for the title, which is what we’ve been trying to get to since the first sentence. We’ve finally arrived. Get comfortable. Stay awhile. It gets better.

It is quite possible to love your life and not like it one bit. You love it, because you recognize that life itself is a gift, even when it feels like you’re being punked. Waking up every day with brand new mercies and new opportunities to do and be something great is a blessing even if you’re burdened with debt, even if you loathe your job, even if you’re suffering in silence with some secret you haven’t disclosed to your spouse.

You’re thankful, humbled even, that God has blessed you in the ways that He has, whatever that looks like in your life. You might be thankful for a short commute to work, Christmas, or coupons.

Maybe you’re grateful for the car you have because you worked so hard for it, although the radio only plays AM stations, you have to manually roll up your windows, and everyone has to get in through the same door.

Maybe it’s the person in your life who loves you that you’re thankful for, sunsets, or the fact that you’re in your right mind (as far as you know).

You love your life because to do otherwise would seem almost
