The long shadow slipped unseen through the night, silent and implacable. The man held a butcher's knife in his black leather-clad hand. He made no attempt whatsoever to hide it.
As he approached a crossroads, he discovered that in the road to the right, several of the streetlights were dark, or rather broken. A sinister smile revealed his teeth. He always found pleasure in the area around the station. This time, things were a little different because he wasn't there solely for his own pleasure, but it amounted to the same thing.
The dark streets were favourite areas, regularly vandalised. They were the scene of many stories, each more sordid than the last. Even during the day, it was a good idea to avoid this type of area. Obscene tags covered the vile-smelling walls, warning careless passersby.
The killer was on the look-out. Suddenly, he noticed a slight movement in the place he had been watching for the last few evenings. This wasn’t the first time he'd come prowling in the area, and particularly in this street. The woman was coming out of her house. He recognised her without difficulty; after all, his razor-sharp knife was destined for her.
She had her routine, always leaving home at the same time. He loved people with regular habits, he loved their predictability. The poor woman walked hurriedly, her high heels clicking along the pavement like threats that did nothing but excite the man, now following her discreetly.
His nose tingled, anticipating the scent of blood that would soon wend its way into his nostrils. His fingers twitched impatiently, and his hand was eager to spring into action right away, hitting her between her shoulder blades. All he would then have to do is pin her to the ground. But he wanted to wait a little more. Not for another evening: he would act tonight because he had already taken enough time. A whole month, in fact. He had held out for so long, but he would soon be submerged by feelings of ecstasy.
