PREFACE
It is our attitude that must change, not the sky under which we live.
Seneca
If we live each day to the full, preserving a young mind and youth in our heart, growing old will be no more than a distant thought. Seneca, ancient philosopher and great expert of the human soul, said, Life is not short, it is quite long and plentiful, provided one knows how to pass one’s time well
. He expressed deep concepts with simplicity. In this vein, I would like the words and reflections that I have written in these pages to be simple, as if we were having a quiet chat while sitting down or walking.
Every day, scientists in research laboratories study ‘the elixir of youth’ to make into pills that will prolong the life of cells. My immediate thought is, What about pills for the soul?
They are as precious as those for the body. How can we live a long life if there is darkness in our soul? The soul is our most vital and spiritual part. Living a long life has much to do with our state of mind
and with making the best use of our time. We must never waste it. Every minute of life is precious and we must learn to live in love and harmony. For thousands of years, ancient medicine has affirmed that when we are in harmony with ourselves and with the world around us, we can be young and healthy at any age. Discord causes us to be vulnerable to illness, accelerating our ageing process. Health of the body alone is not enough to live well. In addition to our bodies, we are also mind and soul. Our mind allows us to understand life; our soul allows us to love. Love is the elixir of eternal life. Having reached the golden age of maturity myself, the most important stage of my life’s adventure, I have decided to share my ideas, reflections, knowledge and experiences acquired through meeting people and hearing their stories. I am from Le Marche and proud to have been born in this region of Italy where people live longer, where there is a high number of centenarians, and which ranks as one of the best places in the world for growing old gracefully. Why do people in Le Marche live longer?
What are the secrets of this remarkable region?
We will gradually discover the answers. Piovene, when writing about this region in the book Viaggio in Italia
, says, A leisurely trip to Le Marche leads you to wonderful surprises
. The Piceno area, where you can find the village where I was born, is typical of Le Marche province. It is rich in ancient traditions, precious resources and home-grown anti-ageing produce, as well as historical towns that have preserved and treasured their traditions, history, art and folklore over the centuries. Towards the end of this book, there is a wonderful interview with Armando, a jovial ninety-year-old who is still in great shape. He is a symbol of long and active life in the Piceno area. Embracing youthfulness
is a dream that can be realised at any age: at twenty, forty or eighty years of age. It all depends on us: the way in which we live, think and act. Whoever is enthusiastic, unafraid of change, and never stops loving, will be young at every age.
THE SEASONS OF LIFE
Flow with life's changes.
Do not stay trapped in a time that no longer exists.
Kriyananda
Our fantastic journey on earth begins with our birth, and the first chapter of the novel of our life opens. From the dawn of youth with its hopes, wishes and dreams, we set off every day towards the sunset of life, towards the golden age of maturity…towards the time of freedom from the burdens of the world, where we can finally be ourselves and dedicate time to what we love most. During this journey, the experiences, trials and challenges that we meet, that we must confront and overcome, are infinite. It is our ‘class test’ in the school of life. Each of us has his own individual test, which cannot be copied. In order to pass the test, we need all the love we have in our heart but also courage, audacity, and the strength of a gladiator in the ring, because life is a continual challenge. Every one of us has a personal story that began even before we were born.
Let us imagine a novel written as a serial for us. We are the main character and the plot is interwoven with our experiences, meetings, feelings, emotions, hopes, wishes and dreams. A ‘constant’ element of the journey of life are ‘the changes’, whether of great or little importance, but that are inevitable. Life itself is dance, movement and change. Like nature that transforms, renews, changes colour, rhythm and shape from one season to the next, we too experience a multitude of changes, mutations and total transformations in the passing from one age to another. Heraclitus, philosopher of Ancient Greece, said, "Everything changes, everything flows, everything transforms". The Epicureans considered time only in the present, in order to experience every moment to the full, lest the moments ‘escaped’. This is the law of life: a continual, perennial alteration like the water of waves – when it returns it is never the same. After birth, the first great change is from childhood to adolescence.
It is a widely unloved phase, and as such, rather unwelcome. There are many Peter Pans who do not like growing up and who would like to spend their whole lives in the ‘playroom’. After adolescence comes impetuous, passionate youth that opens up a window onto a world of new experiences. Youth is the time of passions, first loves and suffering for love. The time of following idols, ideals; a time for great illusions and fierce delusions. A beautiful and carefree age more for those who observe than for those who experience it. After youth comes a period that is more intense and difficult; the richest phase in terms of change. It is a time during which life’s journey becomes an adventure; the route is unknown for many and becomes something like a ‘treasure hunt’. Everyone looks for the prize. The first to reach it is someone who is skilled in finding the clues and the right directions. It is the phase in which we realise life’s plans. We become more conscious of our responsibilities and our role in society and family.
After this, the most adventurous phase follows, unexpected, silent, imperceptible, almost on tiptoe; the phase which leads us to the golden age of maturity that goes hand in hand with old age. It is the most important change of our existence even though it takes us by surprise and finds us unprepared. Sadly, we get old and we do not even realise it. Our lives are too restless and full of ideas for us to notice that we are ageing. We are too distracted by the ways of the world to welcome advancing age serenely. Life is like the snow on a winter’s night that silently paints the earth white; in its changing rhythm of the hours, it marks out days, months, years and suddenly, on waking, everything has changed, everything has turned white like our hair. We do not recognise the quick, fearless passing of time before us, transforming everything, like the water of a stream that boldly runs and slides between the rocks towards the
