About this ebook

The World Is Great, and I Am Small: A Bug’s Prayer is a thoughtful and uplifting reflection on modern life and the human condition, as well as a lighthearted celebration of some of the many truly amazing insects with whom we share our planet (and without whom human existence would cease, almost immediately). In the form of a poem, this meditation is a charming ode to all those that creep, crawl, and fly. Accompanying the poem are stunning photographs of some of the world’s most beautiful and unique creatures.  At the back of the book, an image key explains the various insects adorning the pages of this prayerful keepsake.

    Preface

Let me start by confessing that I’m probably not the most religious person you’re ever likely to meet. When I was a little boy, I dreaded going to church. As soon as my tiny buttocks made contact with the unforgiving hardwood pew, my parents would initiate extreme containment measures. My father would sit on the aisle to block my escape route while my mother would hand me pencil and paper, and with a loving/pleading/warning gaze she would ask me to draw an animal species starting with the letter A and continue the exercise for each letter of the alphabet. I took this zoological art task seriously and it usually kept me quiet and still throughout the preacher’s seemingly interminable sermon. But when it didn’t, I would be sent outside to explore the churchyard hedges where I would gleefully stuff cicadas, snails, and lizards into the pockets of my best clothes. I knew I’d be in serious trouble when the church service was over, but it was almost always worth it. To this day, whether I’m tracking brown bears or searching for unusual beetles, I’m always happiest when I’m immersed in nature. It’s little wonder that when deep spiritual matters occupy my thoughts, I have always felt more comfortable in a forest than in a cathedral.
