Natural Cleaning Made Simple - Margaret Lowe

Chapter 1: Why Go Natural?

Most of us view keeping a clean house as an important part of living a healthy, happy lifestyle. We scrub our countertops, floors, toilets, and furniture in an effort to rid our environments of things we consider to be harmful—germs, dirt, dust, and other contaminants. There’s nothing wrong with being diligent about cleaning, of course. But did you know that the products you use to clean your home may, paradoxically, actually be creating an even more harmful environment than a filthy home? Have you ever considered that if the chemicals in household cleaners—you know, the ones that boast that they destroy 99.9% of bactaria—are so deadly to bacteria, they might also be harmful to humans?

A recent study has shown us that commercial cleaning products (even those labeled as green or natural) emit hundreds of chemicals into the air, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs), that are classified as toxic or hazardous by the federal government. Indeed, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, these days, our greatest exposure to toxic chemicals occurs inside our own homes, rather than outdoors. And on those days when you’ve got your chemical cleaners out, going on a disinfecting spree, the level of toxic chemicals in the air inside your house—including carcinogens, neurotoxins, eye and skin irritants, respiratory distress triggers, and poisonous vapors—can be thousands of times higher than the level of outdoor toxic chemicals in even the most polluted urban area.

Shockingly, in one decade, according to the Center for Disease Control, there has been a 29% increase in asthma among men and a whopping 82% increase in women.  This dramatic increase in asthma rates among women is believed to be due to more exposure to household chemicals. But asthma isn’t the only health concern related to the toxins.  Chemicals found in household cleaning products are also linked to allergies, skin conditions, birth defects, psychological abnormalities, and cancer. Not to mention the approximately five million household poisonings that are reported every year, many of them fatal.

It’s clear, then. Your scrubbing and polishing
