That is the purpose of this book; to educate, enlighten and empower you, so that you can become and develop into that great leader, the mindful leader who is aware of the responsibilities entrusted to him.
    On some level, we are always developing and expanding what is possible in our lives. At some level, what motivates us is the desire to expand our ability to create impact in many of the environments that we are part of, no matter what they are. The desire to create impact, to make a difference, involves an examination of our life to this point and an expansion of our notion of what we think is possible.
    The inner journey of knowing ourselves helps connect us to the source of our personal power. We will not be fully connected to this power until we examine what our values and priorities are and live our life in accordance with them. Once this occurs, we experience a heightened sense of living a life full of integrity and meaning, all qualities of a mindful leader. The commitment to this process, although challenging and full of obstacles, gives the mindful leader a renewed sense of purpose, and knowing of what it is to live a passionate life. With this renewed commitment and vigor, you will be able to create real success and fulfillment for yourself and for others.

      Introduction

      Your Gateway to Discovering the Leader Within

      At the turn of the new millennium, I embarked upon a new path. I transitioned from trial lawyer to what I do now, as life coach and strategist and leadership consultant. A whole new world opened up, and continues to open up, one day at a time.

      I became increasingly aware and intrigued by how the term Leadership was being used. It covers a vast array of subjects. Whether in government, private industry or in the world of non-profit organizations, it implies that there is someone or some entity in charge who runs things and is responsible for results. It could be an individual, a board of directors, or an entire government. If an entity is successful, the ones who are in charge, receive much acclaim, and the satisfaction of a job well done. But if the entity isn’t doing well, the leaders of that entity receive most of the blame, often resulting in termination and or shift in power. We also see that phenomenon in sports, whether it’s at the professional or college level. Success is rewarded with bigger salaries and longer contracts. If a team doesn’t meet or exceed expectations, then quite often the coach is terminated, even before the season is over.

      So where do you fit in? The truth is that we all have that capacity to inspire others and make a difference. That is the purpose of this book; to educate, enlighten and empower you, so that you can become and develop into that great leader.

      What is Leadership Development?

      I have always been on the cutting edge of personal growth and Personal Development, yet having an understanding of exactly what was meant by Leadership Development, had eluded me. Around the beginning of the new millennium, I began a deeper exploration of this complex and evolving subject. Since then I have had the privilege to work with many individuals who have been in leadership positions in private industry and in government. I also have had numerous conversations with others, to see if I could achieve clarity as to what qualities and characteristics, great leaders demonstrate. My research has also benefited from the wisdom and insights gained from reading many great books already written on this vast subject.  It is my hope that my exploration and discoveries, which continue on a daily basis, will give you greater clarity and understanding of the enormous possibility and opportunity of this
