Oftentimes we force girls into a predetermined set of personalities. We expect them to be gentle, cute, and want to play with dolls. But in reality, we couldn't be further from the target, because all girls are different. Girls can be fearless, girls can be silly. Girls can be wild, stubborn, and proud! Girls can find joy in their faces being covered in mud, a simple and powerful thing. Strong is the New Pretty strives to celebrate these variations on the stereotypes, showing that girls can be whoever they want. With over 175 memorable photographs, these images strive to capture the strength and spirit of girls being 100% themselves.

Contrary to popular belief, real beauty IS NOT about being a certain size, acting a certain way, wearing popular clothes, or having your hair styled (or even brushed). Real beauty is about finding your authentic self, and striving to be that person. Kate T. Parker, a professional photographer who searches out the real beauty in girls, has captured it all for the world to see in these candid and striking images.

Designed to be a celebration of personality, a catalog of spirit in words and smiles, and more. Strong Is the New Pretty teaches the powerful lessons of strength and self-confidence.

  • First, the photos in this book are very, very well done. I know that the author is a professional photographer, but dang! These were amazing. They capture the feelings, the raw emotions that are being experienced in the moment of the shot, and they drum up strong emotions from those viewing them (at least they did for me). I will reflect on, however, how silly it is that we need a book like this to help people remember that girls can be whatever they want. Like, how have we come to the place that we need to be reminded that it is ok for girls to play in the dirt, the same way that it is okay for boys to play with dolls, or dress up, or whatever other stereotypical activity we tend to assign to specific genders in children. Overall quite the powerful book, I certainly found myself tearing up more than once while reading it.

  • Packed full of striking photos of young girls, well, simply being human. They are playing, they are not being careful about hair or makeup, and they are enjoying themselves. Many of the photos show girls covered in mud, or sweat, and engaged in strenuous activities that we typically only think of boys doing, which is wonderful because it helps break the stigma that little girls can't play rough. This book is certainly a step in the right direction when it comes to creating more equality in the ways we see children, and perhaps it will help people to realize that little girls just want to play, the same as little boys, and there should be no distinction in the way that we encourage them to enjoy themselves. Treehouses, tire swings, and baseball shouldn't be restricted and allowed to only little boys, what a silly premise that is indeed.

Just extraordinary! I had seen some of these photos online, so I was really excited to see how the print book will look. It lived up to my expectations in every way. The photographs are amazing - action shots and close-ups, full color and black/white. The quotations are all carefully chosen and the book is well organized in themes about several different ways to be strong. I'll definitely buy a copy for my household and one for the high school library too. (I received a digital ARC of this from Netgalley for an honest review.)

A very uplifting collections of photographs of girls being girls. Some of the quotes from the younger ones are great.

This inspiring book has some text at the beginning of each chapter, and each photo has a short quote from the girl photographed, as well as her name and age.Parker celebrates the different ways American girls are strong, and traits that mean different kinds of strength. Friendship, talent, and bravery also get repeated mentions. Great photography, I would love a follow-up on these same girls in 10 years. And maybe 20.Great for girls of all ages.
