Introduction

With German ancestry from his father and Scottish ancestry from his mother, Donald Trump, the 45th president of the United States, epitomizes the American immigrant experience.

Donald Trump´s father, Frederick Christ (Fred) Trump, had German roots. Donald Trump´s grandparents Friedrich (Fred) Trump (1868-1918) and Elisabeth Christ (1880-1966) were both born in the tiny wineproducing village Kallstadt near Bad Dürkheim in the south-western part of Germany. In 1885 in the age of 16 Friedrich (Fred) Trump (1868-1918) immigrated to the US. From New York he headed off to the Yukon, in north-western Canada, following the Klondike Gold Rush. In 1901 Friedrich (Fred) Trump visited his old home town and got in love with Elisabeth Christ and married her in 1902 in Ludwigshafen in Germany. She moved to him and lived together with him in New York. With her home town Kallstadt she had lifelong a strong connection; in 1960 she celebrated her 80th anniversiary in Kallstadt.

Donald Trump´s mother Mary Anne MacLeod has Scottish roots. She came from Isle of Lewis the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Her father, Malcom MacLeod (1866-1954), was a fisherman on the remote Isle of Lewis and married to Mary Smith (1867-1963). This area is still dominated by fishing and nowadays increasingly tourism. In May 1930 she immigrated to the US.

Several ancestors of the German grandparents Friedrich (Fred) Trump (1868-1918) and Elisabeth Christ (1880-1966) as well as of the Scottish grandparents Malcom MacLeod (1866-1954) and Mary Smith (1867-1963) could be identified back to the 12th generation and are listed in the following chapters.

An ahnentafel (ancestor table) is a genealogical numbering system for listing for listing a person's direct ancestors in a fixed sequence of ascent. The subject (proband or progenitor) of the ahnentafel is listed as No. 1, the subject's father as No. 2 and the mother as No. 3, the paternal grandparents as No. 4 and No. 5 and the maternal grandparents as No. 6 and No. 7, and so on, back through the generations. Apart from No. 1, who can be male or female, all even-numbered persons are male, and all odd-numbered persons are female. In this schema, the number of any person's father is double the person's number, and a person's mother is double the person's number plus one.

This method of numbering one's ancestors is used worldwide. The ahnentafel system of numeration is also known as Eytzinger Method, for Michaël Eytzinger, the Austrian-born historian who first published the principles of the system in 1590¹.

Eytzinger’s method was used by Jerónimo de Sosa, in his work „Noticia de la gran casa de los marqueses de Villafranca in 1676, and was popularized by Stephan Kekule v. Stradonitz in his „Ahnentafel-Atlas in 1898².
