    A CHANCE ENCOUNTER

    By Ann B. Keller

    CHAPTER 1

Well, this was a big mistake, Lori Bartlett muttered under her breath.

Tugging her hat more firmly over her long golden curls, Lori hurried down the rain lashed sidewalk. Dodging puddles, sharp metal grates and manhole covers seemed almost impossible in the gloomy weather. Only a few days before, the weather in Chicago had been bright and sunny, one of those golden fall days folks called Indian Summer. Unfortunately, November had now descended upon them with a vengeance.

Why she’d chosen to walk down East Twelfth Street, Lori couldn’t say. She supposed there were probably more people on several of the other streets leading into the city center, but frankly she was curious. This street took her right past the block leading to the Palace Theater. There was a new show in town and Lori wanted to see how much of a crowd might be gathered outside the theater.

Lori paused at the traffic light on the cross street and huddled in misery as the traffic signal slowly moved through its cadence. Shivering in the cold rain, she blinked up at the red signal. Fat, cold drops of rain pummeled Lori’s forehead and nose, stinging her cheeks in their half crystalline state.

Suddenly, a car swerved around the corner and barreled down the street toward her. Even at a distance, Lori could hear the engine screaming in protest and the guttural roar of its exhaust surrounded her. Without slowing, the car sped down the right lane, striking a large puddle of water before sprinting through the intersection against the red light.

Lori gasped in shock. She tried to step away from the plume of water arcing over the sidewalk, but she couldn’t move fast enough. In an instant, Lori was soaked from head to toe. Thin streams of water even penetrated beneath her coat, running in rivulets between her creamy breasts.

Really? Lori groaned, staring after the rapidly disappearing car.

The walk sign finally bade her proceed, but Lori ignored it. Glancing down at her pale legs, she could see they were now covered with muddy water. If her high heels hadn’t been wet enough before, they were now ruined.

Water dripped off the front of Lori’s coat. A few determined chunks of muddy asphalt slowly slid their way down her front, marking trails of gooey brown across the tan material. Thankfully, she’d had her purse slung from her right arm, but the briefcase in her left hand had taken a beating. The wine-colored leather was now stained black with water and speckled by globs of muddy debris.

This day had certainly gone from bad to worse. Once she received her two weeks’ notice, she took a day to recover, then set out job hunting. Job hunting online in late October hadn’t seemed too onerous. Lori thought that things were going rather well. She had a healthy number of responses and the first of her interviews had taken place only about two hours before. Unfortunately, they hadn’t offered her the job and she’d left the building feeling a little desolate.

Coming to her senses again, Lori was forced to wait out the light a second time before proceeding on her journey. She couldn’t help but notice how dark it seemed downtown. Not only were the seasons changing, but the inclement weather had cast an unusual pall cross the downtown skyline. Even though Lori could see no one in front of her or on the opposite side of the street, she felt as though someone were watching her.

Probably just my imagination, Lori softly said to herself.

Of course. The interview hadn’t gone as well as she’d hoped and leaving without a job had depressed her still further. Lori was tired and a little hungry. A hot bowl of chicken noodle soup sounded like heaven right about now.

Lori glanced behind her. The rain pelted the gray sidewalk relentlessly. Tiny pellets of ice bounced in all directions as they struck the hard surface, scattering outward in all directions.

There were shadows everywhere. Seeing anything on that rain soaked evening would have been almost impossible.

Lori kept walking, her feet sliding and squishing a little as she hurried up the inclined street. Most of the north-south streets leading from the lakeshore
