Changing The Game - Carlos Cureno

    INTRODUCTION

    ––––––––

Without question music has evolved and how we listen to this music has changed. The past year has seen the music industry, especially hip hop, become dominated by the streaming wars. Although every streaming company is competing, most agree the primary battle is between TIDAL, the Jay Z-owned streaming company and Apple’s giant, Apple Music.

    ––––––––

These streaming wars have made it a great time to be a fan of the music. In an effort to outdo each other, TIDAL and Apple Music have gone to great lengths to put on the best show for their fans. The entertainment isn’t just on their platforms, as both services have competed to land exclusive content from various artists.

    ––––––––

Interesting enough, as radio personalities like Ebro and Zane Lowe have gotten involved, these streaming wars’ origins go back to the mixtape scene. Mixtapes are one of the cornerstones of hip hop, but they have evolved over the years. Drake completed this evolution with the release of 2015’s If You’re Reading This, It’s Too Late, which a lot of people thought was an album, at first.

    ––––––––

Drake took the concept of the surprise album, started by Beyonce, to new heights. A whole new revenue stream was opened up and Drake became the biggest prize, along with Future, of course.
