Chapter One
Louisville 1879
Goldington Court was the family home of Lovisa Goldington, who some years ago transformed the mansion into a finishing school for girls. Girls whose parents lost everything in the war. Each girl between the ages of fourteen to twenty – one lived at the Manor free of charge and were educated not only in academics but the arts as well as music and dance. In short at the age of twenty – one each girl was ready to take her place in society as the wife of a fine gentleman. The manor was the home of some twenty – five to thirty girls at a time with a waiting list to replace those that have left. Established ten years ago Goldington Court had an outstanding approval in education and an excellent reputation for having fifteen of her girls happily married to fine gentlemen all over the country. Each girl was given a chance again to be part of society.
The newest member eight years ago was thirteen-year-old Laverne Mockridge McAusland, the only child of Cyrus and Lee Anne Mockridge McAusland. Lovisa and Lee had been friends back in Virginia when there were in finishing school together. In those four years, the two girls became as close as sisters would be. Their friendship remained and it was Lovisa who introduced Lee to Cyrus, who was a friend of the young man she saw at the time. She was maid of honor at their wedding and is godmother to Laverne. It was understandable when she received a letter from their attorney stating that both Cyrus and Lee had been killed in an accident on their way home for a political dinner that she would take care of their orphaned daughter. Though not in politics Cyrus had a large shipping and freight business that handled large government contracts. He apologized for not contacting but only found her name on the will, he also asked her to be in Ashland Virginia in two weeks for the reading of the will. He could explain anything else in the letter but did tell him she was in the will and needed to be present.
Arriving in Ashland, Lovisa immediately went to the office of Jefferson, Peters and Henderson, Lee’s attorneys. They were most gracious and explained she had to attend for the reasons that one she was made legal guardian of Laverne, second she was also to be in charge of her trust fund which amounted to seventy –five thousand dollars, and there she was given for her school a total of fifty thousand dollars. All money transactions would be handled by the law firm and will be transferred to Miss Goldington’s bank in Louisville. On the way to Louisville Lovisa and Laverne talked about her parents and how much Lovisa had missed them all these years. Miss Chamberlain was the first to greet them as their carriage pulls to the front of the manor.
"Miss McAusland, this is Miss Chamberlain she will show you to your room and with anything else you may need. We have supper at six o’clock on the dot I expect everyone to be on time. It was Miss Chamberlain who smiled as she led her up the stairs.
I’m sure you’ll enjoy your stay here Miss McAusland.
Oh, you can call me Laverne.
I’m sorry I can’t Miss Goldington has a strict rule only the last name, but you and the other girls may call you by your first names.
It had been eight years since that shy little girl came to the Manor and in a few days she will be twenty – one. The rules of the Manor were when a girl turns twenty – one Lovisa would find a suitable husband for the girls. Even so she had been doing that for some time and having no problem yet with Laverne she’s finding it hard to choose a suitable husband for her. Miss Chamberlain walks
