Chapter 1: How to Grow Tomatoes in a Container – With Steps

While the results of growing tomatoes in pots are stunning, the practice is easier than other ways of growing the vegetable. We are here to provide you with basic yet effective rules of growing tomatoes in containers. Hot climates can present a challenge. The heated soil in large containers can be unsuitable for tomatoes. Therefore, you have to water it regularly to control the temperatures.

The soil in the containers should drain well. In the summer, the challenge is that you need the same soil to hold water for the plant to use. Adding a little compost can solve this problem. Frequent watering can cause the washing away of fertilizer. This leaves the plant without nutrients. Use a dose of slow releasing variety of fertilizer for best results. When you lay the groundwork for container gardening, you can rest assured of success during the plants’ life and when harvesting.

The following are important tips to prevent trouble.

    Use Large Pots

The larger the pots, the more space the plant has to send its roots to collect nutrients and support the plant. This allows the stem and branches to grow to their maximum. Most tomato varieties grow up to 6-8 feet high and 32 feet across. Therefore, a half whiskey barrel is ideal for each plant. Smaller pots limit the growth of the plant and affect the number and size of fruits.

    Add Compost Manure

Add compost to the containers just as you do the same when planting on the ground. Compost manure is ideal because it encourages moisture and cools the plants during hot weather. Therefore, your potting soil should contain 25% of compost. Adding mulch at the top of the soil encourages moisture retention too. Check out our catalog for compost.

    Add Fertilizer Regularly

Since you can add worm castings anytime without over-feeding the plant, it is a good practice. Alternatively, I recommend the use of organic fertilizers because a single addition can stay in the container for 6weeks to 3 months.

Prevent Plants from Sitting in Water

It is very important to use the right potting soil. Do not place trays under the container because it encourages holding of water which in turn drowns the roots. Too much water is harmful for the roots and the entire plant especially when the plant is young. After rains, drain the water completely. Ensure there are enough drainage holes at the bottom of the container.

Provide Enough Sunshine for Your Tomatoes

Porches and balconies are perhaps the best places to keep your tomato containers. This is because they enjoy adequate sunlight at least
