About this ebook

Breaking the Power of Addiction is the story of one woman's powerful journey from the crack house to the church house and to becoming a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor. Shawana Harris unapologetically credits her freedom from a life of addiction to the love and power of Jesus Christ. She shares a message of hope and healing to those who are currently struggling or have family and friends who need to take "one step" to freedom.

    Foreword by Trica Butcher

The first day I met Minister Shawana Harris we had a debate; a debate about how God works. Shawana had a vision and a plan to help the lost and spoke many times of her dream to develop a place of refuge called the Love House—a place to help the hurting. One day Shawana and her mother brought a young man that was high on PCP to the church. I stepped out of my office and there he was frail, scared, and out of his mind.  She brought him towards me, told me his name, and asked me to call them when we were done.  I thought to myself, what just happened? Why would they bring him here and leave? I soon learned that was the type of love and faith Shawana had. You see, one day her mother took her to Church (this will be better understood in the pages to follow).  I’ll just say, she’s been passionate about helping those that are bound ever since. Those that no one else wants to deal with.

For sixteen years I have watched Shawana go after her passion of helping people: those that have HIV and AIDS; those on drugs; and those on the streets. She wants them to know that they matter, and they can be free. By no means am I doing her justice by telling you how passionate she is without telling you about her faith.

Shawana is a Believer. She loves God with all of her heart and walks it out by the way she lives her life.  Everyone that comes in contact with her knows of her God. And without shame, she’s willing to share His name and His amazing love for the lost.  Knowing that she needed a bigger audience to share her story, I was glad to hear that she was writing this book.

When God fixes you, you’re fixed! What a powerful statement.

Webster defines the term fix as making something whole again.  In John chapter 5, the Bible says, Jesus asked the question; will thou be made whole? Wholeness was offered to a man that had an infirmity for thirty-eight years.  That’s a long time to suffer with any pain or sickness. Why wouldn’t he, or anyone, want to be healed? The question was asked as if to say: are you finally ready?  Are you ready to be made whole again, or fixed for good?

In this book, Breaking the Power of Addiction, Shawana Harris takes you on her personal journey of being an addict, but she doesn’t just leave you with another story of what drugs did to her and how one needs to change, but she takes it many steps further. She answers the question that many fail to address: can God heal the addict?

Shawana holds nothing back in this tell-all account of how one Divine intervention radically changed her life.  She does a wonderful job as a Licensed Counselor and a Licensed Minister in combining these two fields with her years of experience into a well-balanced book of hope and deliverance.  I was left with a greater insight on how to better identify, support, and minister to the addict.

I applaud her unyielding candidness and the decision she made to not leave God and faith out of the equation in the field of addiction and recovery. This book is an invaluable resource. The best answer is one that’s lived.
